i thought the advanced was 2 ME 2 PE 3 Copy and no invention
the primary purpose of the advanced lab was to provide more copy slots (especially for people doing invention who need to create lots of BPCs)

It has less total slots, true. However, on many normal labs, the ME slots are in frequent use, and the copy slot backlogged, while the PE slots remain unused. So. . . the Advanced Lab was intended to offer what the players needed: ME and Copy. Also, the Advanced lab Copy slots are even faster than Mobile Lab Copy slots. This helps invention by increasing available BPCs to invent from.
In short, they have less slots, but more useful slots. It's a highly advanced Xerox machine.

No, 0 PE slots on adv. Labs, but 2 Invention Slots.
The advantage of the Adv. are the fast copy slots. The advantage of the Standards are the many invention slots + the PE slots.

Don't some of the slots also have different modifiers depending on the lab type?

All ME and PE slots have 0.75 time modifier
All Invention slots have 0.5 time modifier
Copy slots in regular labs have 0.75 time modifer
Copy slots in advanced labs have 0.65 time modifer.
On a slot to slot basis that means one extra max run BS copy per month.
