Okay, I want to know if it possible to install Eve-online onto a USB flash drive, of appropriate size of course, and run it off of that instead of having it installed on your hard drive. Then my next question is how much of a performance difference would there be. My case is this I am unable to install programs on a comp that I use but I am allowed to access the internet during breaks and such, so long as it isn't **** and stuff. So I am trying to think of a way I could use it to change skill training during the day and I thought of this but don't want to to spring for the 8GB flash drive if it won't work. Thank you in advance for the advise.

Edited by: MotherMoon on 10/10/2007 19:10:32 I run it off an ipod at school, it's not that bad. we port it through our home computer as the school has the adress blocked.
so yes it is very possible. But don't go into fleet battles.
8GB??? why? eve isn't that big...
and with the grpahics updates version I wouldn't bet on it. ----------------------------------- I'm working my way through college target CCP need...more room... |

It works, but for best results create a shortcut to launch it with the "/end /LUA:OFF" options so that it will store the cache and settings on the flash drive as well, thereby leaving no footprint on that computer.

This is the best way to do it. I've heard of significant performance increases with this method.

the only space you need is the size of your eve directory. basicly, all you're gonna do is copy the eve directory from your PC onto the USB drive. just go to where it's installed and right click the folder and look at the properties. should be about 1.5GB so a 2BG USB stick will store eve and you'll eb able to play it from there without any problems.
assuming that the PC in question meets the RAM/CPU/etc requirements of the game (i.e. as much CPU as it can get). ========================================== Iy

Edited by: Eval B''Stard on 11/10/2007 04:49:40 Yup I play off a 2gb stick and it works just fine, if you fill the rest of the stick with junk (after you've played a bit and got your overview etc setup how you want it) you won't get bogged down with logs either.
Once the stick is full EvE just won't log anything anymore but will continue to function quite happily.
EDIT:- Just a thought you will want a copy of D3DX9_30.DLL, from the C:\windows\system32 folder of your main computer, in the EvE folder on your stick, just in case it's not on the computer you take the stick to. -------------------------------------------

Got a 4 gig stick for 30 bucks months ago, hadn't even considered this . Definitely doing it, maybe even letting the stick be a DX9 EVE when its released in November.
I'll actually able to show my friends how fun EVE can be without forcing them to get a trial/download (they're lazy).

just get a decent, fast, stick.. not just any stick
i personally use OCZ Rally 4GB they aren't as cheap but at 27MB/s read speed you can't complain

Thinking about doing this myself. I'm going to be having 6 hours of spare time at school on Tuesdays as I'm starting a new class in the morning, and have another one in the evening. I'm too cheap to burn the gas to go home and come back again, but not too cheap to buy a USB stick to play EVE with!
/me makes note to bookmark this thread when he gets home.

The RB1 ($33.98) from Newegg has a transfer rate 480mb/sec at "high" speed, whatever that means. Is the transfer rate "read speed"?

that is almost certainly mbits (either that or false advertising ) 480mbits = 60mbytes = still very high for a flash drive, doubt any could hit that TBH - TQ has encountered a database issue, we are sitting around wondering why it has crashed this time, waiting for 500,000 petitions and watching the forums fill up.

That's marketing hype - 480Mb/s is the peak transfer rate for USB2.0 - in other words the maximum speed of the interface.
The speed of the flash memory will be way lower, about half that for the most expensive retail sticks. _____________________________________________
