So here is the scenario. Lets say I have a dominix with 5x wardens. I leave the drones 151 km from the gate (Drone control range 165km).
I then move away from the gate until I am 249km away.
Target jumps through, I lock it at 249k and order drones to engage.
Q1. Will the drones engage? Is it the drones that have to be at least 165km from the target or me?
Q2. If they do engage: I move away from the gate and as I pass 250km I lose lock. Will the drones keep firing?

Its all about you.
You have to be within 165km from the drones and 165km from the target, which means the sentries can in fact engage at 330km(I guess, never tested extreme ranges like that(>249km)) however, with not tracking links, they won¦t hit for half of that.
Sentries act much like any other drone, if they¦ve started attacking - their jaws are locked.

Generally the missions tactic is to go to, say, 80km, plunk down your sentries, start sniping, and when they get close, scoop the sentries and move away.

My experience with drones is that as long as you can lock your target, and your control range is big enough, your drones will obey.
That is to say, even if your drones are 200km away from you, if you're within 165km of your target, you can tell your drones to open fire. At that point you can leave that range and your drones will keep munching them.
Now as far as how far is "drones in distant space" range, I couldn't tell you. Never experimented with that. My understanding is they go inert once you break that range.

You're right, I didn't realize that. But from the extreme range, I assumed he was going to pull the rats from ungodly range, and let the sentries go to work during the course of the ungodly ranged pull.
