On the left under the forum tab go to Settings, and select the char you want. Tick 'Default Character' and voila! 
Anyway, a good pvp setup is usually something along the lines of -
One / Two Damage fit pilots
Zero / One Jammer or Damp fit pilots
Zero / One Energy Neutralizer fit pilot
There isn't much to it, just going on ships. Fittings is a different matter, and far too long for me to go into

interceptor + 2 damage dealers, ideally 3 gank ships
you don't have to worry about jamming/neuting/tanking wrecks. giving people the chance to shoot back does keep things more interesting, as well.

If its pirating im guessing low sec,
3 bs all which do the same tank (armor or shield)
Few remote reps,
Few damps,
ECCM back up.
Jump 1 of ur bs into a system with loads of nubs who think there good , wait for ur bs to get ganked .. jump ur 2 friends in , spider tank to teh **** while pwning them until they run.
If u just wanna go round catching peeps and not being able to catch people on gates ,
Have a recon, which damps or jams
2 good heavy assaults or command ships
Or for fun,
3 t1 cruisers with a few damps u can still pwn =)
Man please change the arty sound from the pathetic but classic pew to something more like "chung chunk"

I dnon't usually bother with recons.
There is nothing wrong with taking dmg in a fight, just make sure your doing more of it

Hey. Thanks for char-change advice!.
Ok, 3 of us, just about reaching the point we're thinking of heading out and spreading a bit of cheery YArR! amongst the players of Eve ;P
So, we're thinking of 3 man crew. My first thoughts were along the lines of;
Tank+Damage dealer
Ranged damage+remote rep/shields / suppression?
Frig tackler, web+scram and anything else it can fit to throw out.
Now.. how achievable is this in only cruisers + frigs?

3 recons. or if your gonna gatecamp I'd say 1 bs and 2 hacs, or some cs's. People will argue about sniping but I think its more exciting and challenging sitting on the gate and not hiding 200+km out.

If your looking at only using cruisers/frigs...
2 thorax with ecm drones in the bay
1 celestis
Catch and tackle with the rax's bring the celestis in at range, damps + 10 med ecm and 10 blasters = winning fights you should lose...

pritty much depends on what you are going to do in my opinion.
For example, high sec suecide gank, id go with 3 t1 neutron brutix.
low sec gank, id take a barge, slap what ever tank fits on it, and have 2 heavy hitters waiting on gate. 0.0 ratter killing, id go for 3 recons....
depends on the job, and unless ur more specific u wont get any helpful answers here

My family of characters is the perfect setup:
1. Heavy Battleship(Hyperion is a good one!)
2. Prober(At first just a covert ops, but could go into a pilgrim and be wtf pwn)
3. Hauler for picking up loot. 
If you want, exchange the hauler for a vaga pilot, which can tackle very fast.

I mean come on a ship that can't be scrammed and you can't launch bubbles in low-sec. Heck with three of them forget the cap reps and put something else in there and just remote rep each other.

Nice ideas.
3 recons is a popular choice; but then a couple of you have said abut specializing: tackler / dps / EW
The last wee have tried, kinda. I had a blackbird with recon probes + 4xECM multispec, they were 2 frigates, kitted for tackle / dps
..if we find anything I'll let you know how it goes. We found squat first day apart from some guy kiting on the max range of sentry guns, se we decided to break that off.

What you really need is a plan...
1/ how to catch targets
2/ how to kill targets efficienty
3/ how to escape from blobs and other dangers
for that you can do many combinations of EW, speed or other things...
