Can someone please explain in more detail, or define exactly what "ratting" is, as well as what "scamming" is? I see these terms used freqently - but when it comes right down to it - I guess I really don't know what they mean.

Ratting is killing NPC belt pirats or pi-rats.
Scamming is just that inside & outside of EVE. You know what a scam is don't you?

Ratting is shooting down the NPC ships you'll find in asteroid belts, some startgates & other areas. Fairly simple way to build up extra ISK, as well as standings (faction).
You don't know what scamming is? Well, you and I sould have a talk about this little bridge in Brooklyn I happen to own...
Scamming is the art of deceiving other players into handing over there ISK, ships, equipment, whatever. Unlike many other online games, thievery & treachery are a common occurence.
Trust is one of the most valuable commodities in EVE... and it ain't for sale.
Be wary, keep your eyes peeled... and have fun. |

Live by the motto: If its too good to be true it ussually is.
Read things carefully, then reread them again. Have everything in writing (avoid doing contracts over a voice system). Check the history of the guy you are talking to. Check the location of where the item in question is located (if its valuable and in low sec, reconsider going).
Unless you have known the other person for years and or he has a rep for being honest, always, always -ALWAYS- demand collatoral of some form. Words are not worth the effort it takes to type them.

Thanks for the elaboration. I certainly know what "scamming" means in RL ; but wasn't sure if it meant the same thing in game. I also wasn't sure if ratting applied only to NPC ships or other players as well - again, thanks for the clarification.
BTW - how do I get my image to show up in the forum rather than the big exclamation point??

It'll show up eventually. Portraits are rendered in batches, and only after you've posted on the forums. Now you've posted it will be rendered in the next batch of portraits.

Edited by: Ancy Denaries on 18/10/2007 09:08:31 And as someone mentioned:
scRamming is removing someones warp-capability by distrupting his warp engines using a Warp Scramble (thus scram) or a Warp Distruptor (also called scram but has a longer range and MUCH more cap usage).
Also commonly referred to as "putting points" on a target. A scrambler puts 2 "points" on a target, requiring him to overcome the scrambler by two points, either by using a transport ship (which has native resistance points) or by using Warp Core Stabilizers which each add one points (but also KILL your targetting range and targetting speed). A distruptor adds only one point, but as mentioned above it does so at a greater range. (20km compared to a scram which has 7500 meters)

It should be duly noted that "scamming" is tolerated, as this is a pvp game. Bad guys win sometimes and lose allot more than they like to admit...But trust nobody there all out to steal your newb logs like uo, but now we call the logs ore
But "scamming" gtc that will get you banned faster than doing 90 in 25 and running over grandma...
CCP dosnt like it when you steal its money...
