I've just had a look at that shiny new news item with the before and after pics of the geddon.
I know it's a work in progress, but I still wanted to give my feedback on it. For one thing, the windows are way too big, making the ship look less like a battleship sized vessel, and more like a cruiser... This would be my most important point of criticism. Also look at the placement of the windows on the main body of the ship, behind the turret hardpoints on the sides - the old model has it's windows stretched out along a straight line, and none on the slanted bulk of that part, making it look more solid and properly "armored". The placement of windows on that part of the model in the new version makes it look more fragile and vulnerable. Same thing on the aft section. The color scheme is different than what we're used to, but I like it a lot, actually. All in all, I'd suggest not to go with these big swatches of windows, and integrating the old approach instead, while making sure that a proper sense of scale is maintained.

I'd like to echo the complaint about windows with respects to pretty much every dreadnaught design in the game. It would be a lot nicer if they didn't have thousands of windows all over their hulls when they're supposed to predominantly be armor-tanking (Phoenix, Nagalfar should but on the Moros it just looks absurd).

I¦m quite sure, that it¦s already much too late (CCP wants to deliver within 45 days), but I also think that the windows are too big (I even think, that the old design has a better style at all).

If I may,
I have read the responses on this thread....and I feel somewhat the same.
Why those huge windows? If you look at the original model, this small windows give you a sense of....hugeness?...no, that's not the word I was looking for but I think you get the picture. And those windows in the center, wouldn't they look a whole lot better if they where place like in the old model? - instead of centered, stretch
Other then that...I think everything else look very nice :)
ps: first post in this section of the forum :)

I agree with everything here. But want to add something.
The new design, especially for say, the prophecy where the ship looks like a ship that is built in two stages, is really good, but you have to execute it well. For the Geddon it looks only half executed.
Stage one is the ship itself, all the mechanics and moving parts and powerplants etc.
And stage 2 is the plating where huge prefabricated golden plates are afixed to the ship. The ship ought to look like it was built in the same way a knight puts on his armor, so that the shining golden knights of righteousness can burn the heretics to the ground.
With the prophecy it looks like this was gotten right. With the Geddon it looks half right. The two nose plates look good, and so does the cover for the turret mounts. But there are areas of the ship where it doesnt seem like this has happened.
The simple changes that can be made to the Geddon are to remove lights from areas that ought to be armor, and to make the lights that do exist smaller. Otherwise, its great.

It's a different point, but I agree completely. Space should be a lot prettier than it is in EVE currently. However, there was something about that announced in the latest press release:
Quote: The 'EVE Online: Trinity' expansion includes:
A new graphics engine:
- All spaceships, stargates and space stations in EVE Online have been remodeled; each object is comprised of several million polygons and multiple layers of high resolution textures
- Native Shader Model 3.0 engine
- Environmental effects, such as shadows and nebula-based lighting models, tie graphical assets into the different solar systems of EVE Online
- Ground-breaking visual fidelity, which blurs the lines between a game and a movie
My emphasis. This makes me kind of hopeful. --- WTS: Forum Signatures, price negotiable. Evemail me!

Edited by: Trojanman190 on 14/10/2007 00:16:00 Oh man.. except for the new engine effects like self shadowing and normal maps... the old ship looks WAY better. I see why they took that off the main page. Technology goes forward but the look and feel goes backwards twice as far.
I agree with what is being said about the windows... why did the window size change from engine to engine? That makes no sense. Why was this huge inconsistency not discovered earlier in the design?
Awesome works on the shaders, lighting and shadowing, but holy crap if this is an indication of what we will be looking at for the next few years please provide a client with the lighting enhancements on the old models... that bugger is painful...
Edited for stupid spelling.

Well i think there is a need for concern as the new engine is supposed to be released in less then 2 months, even though its classified as a work in progress I wonder how much time the art department can spend on redoing a model like that.

I honestly don't give a damn about the window size, and neither do any of you when your in the middle of a battle. You don't have time to admire your pretty windows when your getting sniped...just be appreciative of the graphical boost were getting as whole. Any graphical improvement is a good one in my opinion.
Besides, the reason why they are making amarrian battleships look cruiser sized is because thats what they are worth in pvp.

Will people please stop confusing constructive feedback with 'whining'.
Anyone who believes that the 'devs always know best'...needs to take a long hard look at the track record of certain CCP ship designers over the past four years.
They have inflicted some of the most 'aesthetically challenged' models ever seen in a game on the long suffering population of Eve.
Game artists and modelers need to be kept on a very short leash...fugly spaceships are not 'cool' and pink phallus shaped spaceships (complete with *******) are just a very bad joke.

CCP guys, seriously, you have to fire your head designer.
Have you ever seen windows and shiny lights on a tank? on a real life battleship ? or maybe some holes and spaces in armor coating? it's NOT realistic, and it is total crap. Noone in his right mind will go to war on a luxury liner, which your gesign team seem to portray, instead of war vessels.
Combat ships must look dangerous, well armed and armoured. Big guns, thick armour, NO WINDOWS.
