It matters little (as of now) what race you are as any ship in EVE can be flown by anyone. Starting as a given race merely gives you a tiny leg up in that direction but down the road it amounts to little.
For PvP Caldari probably have the best selection of ships. The Kestrel is a good PvP frig, Caracal and Blackbird are the premier PvP cruisers and Scorpion battleships can be very tough customers.
For NPC hunting Amarr seem to work best as lasers don't hurt the wallet buying loads ammo (no ammo).
Of course this is all somewhat general. A Moa (Caldari cruiser) makes a fine NPC hunting ship as does a Thorax (Gallente cruiser). Thorax can also be very good in PvP when combined with a Blackbird or three. For frigates a Vigil is the frigate equivalent of the Blackbird and can be very useful. For battleships while a Scorpion is a tough customer a Tempest (Minmatar battleship) can be every bit as good or better depending on the situation. A Megathron (Gallente battleship) in the right situation deals more damage than any other ship in EVE and an Apocalypse (Amarr battleship) is a tough customer in anybody's book.

If you take the attributes into account the Minmatar Brutor is the best fighter in the game.

Edited by: Bitex on 29/02/2004 10:36:32 I see you don't mention the Caldari Merlin in your list of great fighters. Is there a special reason for that? I ask because I bought one a couple days ago. Kestrel is a pure missile boat..and merlin is more expensive than kestrel. I'm not a very routined player, mostly bought it coz I was bored of mining with my Bantam. Any reason why I should not bother and get another fighter instead? It also says in the description that this is the best fighter in the caldari frigate class.

The merlin isn't a really amazing ship for frigate. Mainly because the best ships are cruisers and battleships.
The thing is that the merlin can only sport 2 turret hardpoints and 2 missile hardpoints (4hi slots) while for example, the minmatar rifter has 3 turret hardpoints and 2 missile hardpoints (4 hislots) and is much faster than the merlin.
It really depends on your taste though, merlins get a bonus with hybrid turrets (150mm is your best bet, i suggest loading lead charges) while the minmatar rifter is best suited for projectiles (depending on the npcs you fight, you should carry 2 howitzers or 3 200mm autocannons with 1 standard missile launcher, try to get some extra powegrid space too).
My only question shipwise is : are interceptors worth it ? I hear both sides of the table; people that praise and adore them, and people that find them near-useless.
