Hi all,
I've got a question regarding mining drones that I keep asking in the Rookie Help Channel when playing EVE that I cannot get a straight answer to.
Basically, is there anywhere other than your cargo hold that you can unload a mining drone? Specifically, can you unload mining drones at a space station in the items folder just as you would when unloading your cargo hold?
Many thanks.

drones just go into your hanger at the station.

Cheers for that but I just need to clarify where I can unload them to.
Perhaps, looking at my first post, I wasn't very clear in what I was asking. Is my cargo hold the only place that I can unload the ore that they've mined or can I unload the ore anywhere else?
Many thanks.

not a great mining expert, but to my knowledge, anything you mine with lasers/drones go into your cargo hold, from where you can put it manually either in a secure container or jettison it to pick it up with an industrial (risky in highsec). Hope that helps.

ah. think i'm following you here. when you're mining, the ore mined by the drones is automatically unloaded to your cargo hold as they mine. They can't warp back to stations.
hope this is what you were trying to get at.

Right, think I'm getting you here. So it's limited by my cargo hold but, for example, if I have 15 drones - my ship's droid bay is 75 cubic metres - and a couple of cargo bay expansions that take me up to ~1000 cubic metres of cargo hold then all that happens is that my cargo hold would be filled up much quicker than if I was using a mining laser. Have I got that correct?
The advantage I see from this is that I could make far more trips than with my industrial ship which has ~4000 cubic metres of cargo hold in any given time and would make more ISKs in the long run.
Plus I'd have the reassurance of the fact that I was using a cruiser and, if I get set upon by pirates, eg, then I could defend myself as I have 3 beam lasers and a railgun whereas I can't with my industrial ship.
Have I understood this all correctly?
Cheers.

The maximum amount of mining drones that you will be able to use, is 5. Requires Drones skill at lvl 5.

Edited by: Thorke on 14/10/2007 12:02:34 You can test this to be sure; but from what I have seen, 5 mining drones can't really compete with the lasers you can mount on a cruiser. If you have the space for both combat and mining drones, you could use 5 drones to mine and then redeploy 5 combat drones when needed.
The best yields for solo mining are obtained by mining in a well fitted mining ship (preferably a mining barge or exhumer) and carrying the ore back to the station using your industrial ship. You can do this solo by dumping a hauler load into jettison cans and then switching to the industrial to cart stuff back; however, it is even better if you either work with another player or a character on a second account so that PvP types can't swoop in and steal your ore (it is almost always in one hold or another).

Thought that might be the case and, even though I bought 15 mining drones, I paid such a low price that I should make a tidy profit on the excess mining droids.

Unfortunately I'm not skilled enough for a mining barge as yet but I am working on it as we speak.
As for the mining drones, if I use 5 of them at 15 cubic metres on the mining amount - do I get any bonuses' for mining skills? - that makes 75 cubic metres a time, whereas my mining laser yields 56 cubic metres at the moment so I can mine faster. It's now a case of whether the extra speed in mining is offset by the time taken to travel to the spot I want to mine against the 4x capacity that my mining ship has compared to my cruiser.
I think I'm going to test this out and see how I get on!!

Drones do add quite a bit to your mining yield, but in the end, ship bonuses and skill bonuses will make your lasers WAAAAAAAY better than drones. Best way to increase your drones' yield is to increase Mining Drone operation (20% for each level I think) and Drone Interfacing (another +something%). Don't quote me on the numbers, but those are the two skills that affect your drone mining yield.
However, as mentioned before, you're really WAY better off increasing your mining skills instead and focus on using drones primarily for defensive purposes.
Mining = +5% mining yield per level Astrogeology = +5% mining yield per level Frigate skill = +20% mining yield on mining frigates (Navitas (Gallente) and Bantam (Caldari) to mention a few) Cruiser skill = +20% mining yield on mining cruisers (Osprey (Caldari) to mention one) Mining Barge skill = +3% mining yield on mining barges (Procurer, Retriever and Covetor) Exhumer Skill = +3% mining yield on Exhumers (The Hulk) Exhumer Skill = +60% mining yield on the Skiff for mining Mercoxit.
But, in the end, I have really only ONE good advice to you. Read Halada's Mining Guide. The best mining guide there is.

Yeaht, that. It will get you well on your way to the world of mining. And Mining Drones can be useful, but until you're at a certain point in your mining career, it's best, as she said, to work on improvements to your ship's mining yield.
One little correction to Ancy, the Mining Barge skill levels (Lvl 5 required for the Exhumers) still give bonuses on the Exhumers. ------------------- 4 8 15 16 23 42 108 |

True that, my bad. I know it does but it didn't get thru in the text :P But you are right, of course.

Lasers are better, true, but if you use a ship that has drone bonuses, such as the vexor, you will get a 10% per level yield increase and the mining drone skill also gives a bonus (5% per level I think).

The best use for the other 50m3 of drone bay space would be 5 medium combat drones to help fend off rats.
I'd also go ahead and keep the other 10 mining drones. Those things have a tendency to die quickly when rats appear at the belts, and you'll likely need replacements.
