A corpmate of mine has a rather unfortunate name which starts with 'raven'. This has not been a problem for him up to now, but we did the Agony basic course over the weekend, and the first time a real Raven came through a gate, and the order "Target Raven" was issued, 6 people in the class targeted and blew up my corpmate's frigate - one of them even went after his pod. We all saw the funny side of this, after all, it was a new situation for most of us, everyone is entitled to make a few mistakes, and frigates are cheap.
However, we were wondering if this was enough justification to try a petition to get his name changed - he has too many skill points to want to reroll the character. What does the community think? Has anyone heard of a character name being changed for this reason? Should he get used to warping to a safe spot whenever a Raven turns up?

Edited by: Loc Maythan on 15/10/2007 11:12:33 People were instructed to only have targets on the overview - one of the pre-course documents describes precisely how the overview should be set up - but it seems that some people had their own preferences.
I would agree that calling targets by name is more reliable than calling by type - after all, 4 Ravens might have come through, and you would want everyone concentrating on the same one. And I suspect that is what would have happened if multiple instances of a ship type came through, but in this case there was only one Raven - well, two, if you count my corpmate ;-)
Maybe if I can convince a GM that I find the word 'raven' offensive - it's against my religion as a member of the Church of Christ the Ornithologist - we can get it changed ;-)

Originally by: Ka Jolo Heh, I got in on one of those killmails! =) The poor guy came under fire 3-4 IIRC.
The problem wasn't just that his name started with "Raven," but that he would get disconnected. When he came back, he was not yet ganged and so showed up on our overviews. I do remember the fleet commander saying "Raven is friendly! Do NOT target Raven!" but in a fleet of 30 frigates some are bound to not pay attention.
He is in South Africa and has a somewhat eccentric connection, as do all our South African members. We had a good laugh about it afterwards - his corp title even before the course was something like "Laser magnet" ;-)

Originally by: CCP Prism X Hah! Great story.
But I'm sorry to say that we don't change names on request unless they are might right after character creation because you named yourself Ucaris rather than Icarus and took a while to notice it. Otherwise it enables people to hide from their reputation, which is all you really have in EvE.
Oh well ... it was worth a try. I'll tell him to buy lots of spare ships ;-)

Some people - Shar'Tuk, Anacrit, Warp Shout, Calmdown - need to read the posts a bit more thoroughly before commenting.
1) I was not critising the course or Agony - apart from being a little slow at the start during the theory section, it was a lot of fun and run very well. The intention of the post was to make a few people laugh - which seemed to work in most cases - and to test the 'name-changing' water.
2) Agony do instruct people on how to set up their overviews to show only targets - it is required reading before the course - but they cannot force people to follow their advice. In any case, as has been pointed out - reading ftw - my corpmate had disconnected, so his ship left the gang and appeared as a valid target.
3) It was not his corpmates who shot him. He has flown with us for months, and we are used to his name. It was other people on the course - people in other corporations - who were not familiar with his name who did the shooting.
Anyway, thank for a great course, Agony - I will be attending futher courses in the future.
