After downtime i'll finally be able to fly my retriever, i've got most of the stuff for it, but i'm just wondering if it's a good loadout.
2 Strip miner I's, 1 shield extender, 4 combat drones.
Is there anything i've missed out? Anything i can change? I'll be mostly operating in 0.5 systems, so it doesn't need to be too extreme.

See if you can squeeze in a mining laser upgrade in there too.

Probably the best for at-your-keyboard would be this.
2 T1 strips
Survey scanner
MLU (probably T1)
Co-processor
If you want more of a tank, I'd personally go with small repper, EANM/cap power relay/co-pro, cap recharger, 2 strips.
EDIT: Oh, and Drones V and Drone Interfacing III ASAP.

Until I train electronics up, I cant use a mining laser upgrade on my retriever. What I use now is 2 T1 strip miners, 1 survey scanner, 1 capacitor power relay, and 1 small T2 armor repper. With 3 drones its no problem killing npc spawns while I mine, sometimes I get harder spawns and they might get through shield, in which case the repper will run for a few minutes until they are dead. My drone skills arent great, so with 5 light T2 drones and decent skills, you wont even need to worry about tanking (in empire).

5 drones
survives fine in .5 sec, assuming your at the keyboard though

The cargo expanders are worthless. Without rigs, the Retriever will out-mine even a double-expanded cargohold in two cycles.

Without expanders a Retriever can mine more than it can hold in 1 cycle.

Sure, it can mine more. But by the time your skills get to that point, you should be flying a Covetor already.

I have to apologize...
I don't have the mining barge skill for a Covetor yet, but it was my Mining Foreman skill that puts me over 1020m^3 per strip on my retriever. So, while technically I can mine more than I can hold without rigs, the mining foreman skill was why I need expanders.

That would have been true before the character create process gave people nearly a million sp. Newer characters that get the mining starting skills can start out with enough points in foreman to overtop their holds during the month it takes to train for the Cov. Nevertheless, ditch the retriever as soon as you can. Cov is superior in all ways.

Ah. This would explain things. I would then go with a single cargo expander, small armor rep, and survey scanner/cap recharger.
