Poked around on a trial account and found the community of this game to probably be it's most valuable asset. Figured I'd give it a shot.
Looking to build a Business --> Commander specialty character, decided this because of it's potential both in Commercial and Combat areas as a support type character. Or at least that's what I drew as a conclusion. This playstyle suits me.
So I'm looking for advice, in areas such as attribute placement for this style character. Race selection. Skill selection. Etc.. and also general advice.
Bear in mind I'm a total noob so specifics and detail would be excellent.
Thank you.

to start off, if you want to be in the pvp gamestyle of eve, you should pick the Caldari Achura race because it gives you huge bonuses to Perception/Willpower (which are the attributes that determine how fast you train certain skills)
business and pvp are rarely mixed successfully because pvp invests so much time into training gun skills, ship skills, drone skills etc...
some people create a business alt to finance their pvp alt
but if you're starting a new character you should always train up the learning skills first, all of them, including the advanced one...
there are plenty of sticky guides on this forum talking about which race is best for what and which skills you need to train first and they explain alot.

That helps a good bit because the Executive Commander specialty looked like it dabbled both in business and combat fleet style. I'm still a little bit blown away by the complexity of the skill system. Though your advice is welcomed and taken.

The best general advice for character selection is to first choose one that you like the looks of.
Second balance the attributes as close to 8's as you can.
Lastly choose the carear path based on what you want to do in-game for the first month or two.
For combat pilots Perception (primary for ship and weapons skills) and Intelligence (primary for tanking and fitting skills) are the most important attributes. Memory is close behind with its use in drone and learning skills.
While Willpower is secondary to most of your ship and weapon skills, it is only primary for T2 ship skills. This makes it appear as a primary attribute for fewer skills than even Charisma. A secondary attribute has only half the effect of a primary attribute, so it is better to place your attribute points into your primary attributes.
In all, you will probably be best off to keep your attributes balanced because a gimped attribute will do more damage to your training times than a maxed attribute will fix your training times. If you ever change your mind with regards to what you want to train, you will be greatful for balanced attributes.
As for carear path, once you have your basic learning skills, it would only take you a week or two to train all of the starting skills that you would be missing from another carear path. The speciallization from your choice of carear path is tiny compared to long term training.
You should use either role playing or your immeadiate interests to choose your carear path as it will have no long term effect on your character.

Sera, there is a small problem with starting your first character as "business type".
You don't really have the spare isk starting out to get the business thing going on any kind of reasonable scale.
Character creation/career guides you through getting your beginning skills. Which in the end means very little as you can buy and train skills for any "career" path as long as you have the isk. Your never limited/blocked/penalized from training any skill.
My advice is start a character with balanced attributes around 8-9, maybe let charisma slip to 6 or lower. This "balanced" character will get you into the game, let you see how things really work, and in the end will train equally well for ANY career direction.
Once you have the spare isk to run a business operation, then use your balanced character "jack-of-all-trades", or make a specialized alt to train "trade" skills, which many of us already do with the (2)spare character slots you get.
My favorite beginning characters have either frigate-4(combat), or come with mining-5(mining character) Either of these will really get your isk flow started so you can branch out into business/trade faster. IMHO
