If a ship has 2 high slots but only 1 turret hardpoint, how many mining lasers can it carry - 1 or 2? The reqs for mining lasers say they need only 1 high slot, but if I take the time to learn another race's Industrial ships, I want to make sure I get 2 mining lasers...and those other ships show 2 high slots but only 1 turret hardpoint.
Thanks for any help.

Mining in industrial ships isn't a very speedy way to do anything. Find an out of the way system (there are plenty of these) and jettison your ore, and come back later (after no more than an hour's work) with your industrial for it. This way you get to rake in the ore a heck of a lot faster without constantly shuttling back to the station.
Of course there are always giant secure containers if you're skittish about jettisoning their ore, but they have their placement limitations and they're not that large.

Grr, thanks. This might be a broad question, but what ship class would you recommend for mining generally?

What the above poster is talking about is commonly refered to as "Jet Can Mining" as in, you jettison your ore, and fill the can that comes out. Each jettisoned can holds around 27k of ore. This is a very easy way to mine continually for a long period of time, and then collect your ore in a few trips with an industrial.
A few tips on Jet Can mining.
1. Move your ship to where you can hit a number of asteroids at once, that way you can use the same can for multiple roids. 2. Set a bookmark at this spot so that you can warp right in on top of your can. Industrials are not known for their speed and agility. 3. At some point, at some time, you will deal with an ore thief. Someone will either take your ore, or take some in the hopes of making you aggro them. Accept this as part of the risk. Salvage the ore you can, and accept the rest as loss.
As far as ships to use...if you want to be a miner in the long haul you can work towards training for a hulk, or an ORE mining barge. However, in the short term, each race has a frig and cruiser that is designed for mining. (designed as in they recieve bonuses to mining in some way).
I would recommend this. Buy and outfit a mining frig. Open your map and find a system that appears to be out of the way and go take a peek at it in your frig. Be way of how difficult the rats are, and make sure that you can kill them. If needs be, start by mining in a 7-8+ sytem so rats arent a problem. Once you find your place, drop off your Frig at a nearby station/safe point and go back for your industrial hauler.
That should get you started. After you make a little isk, learn how to deal with can flippers/ore thieves, you can get more bold and head deeper into more dangerous areas to make your money.

The Frigates and Cruisers each have one that is allegedly better than the others at mining.
As a Gallente - I used a Navitas (until it got blown up) and then an Imicus for mining as it had the largest cargo hold, until I could buy an Exequror Cruiser and used that until I could buy an ORE Mining Barge. I started with a Procurer and then got a Retriever as soon as I could.
Each ship was a step up in my mining ability.
Yes, when you are looking at the show info for a ship you need to take Turrets and Missile Launchers into account. Some ships for example have NO missile launchers ... so if you want to shoot missiles - don't buy one of those.
My criteria for mining Frigates and Cruisers was - how many Lasers can it hold & how much cargo space does it have?
If you're playing another Race - you might take that into consideration in picking your early ships. The mining barges - which is probably what you want to ultimately get for mining - are all the same. They are made by ORE - not one of the Factions.
The best Mining barges are the Covetor and the Hulk but they are consequently more expensive and require longer training.
Industrials are not really very well suited to speedy mining as they only have one turret spot (at least in all the ones I've used so far ...). However ... one way you can use them, is if you have something else to do - but can stay near the computer. You can just go to an asteroid in .9 or 1.0 space, lock it and mine away. So you can, for example, watch Heroes on TV and still get some mining done. Just listen up for the computer to mention that the asteroid has been depleted or the sounds that something is wrong.
Mostly what Industrials are good for is hauling ore someone else has mined. Just be careful about leaving jet cans laying about as the Ore Thieves will come along and pick on you. Thus they work better if you have a friend or a second account. Eve runs two copies fairly well on one system, as long as it isn't to slow, so you don't actually need a second computer.

2 notes about the above post:
1) the gallente have the worst mining ships as they are totally lacking a mining cruiser (the mining cruisers have a bonus to the mining yeld). Generally the best non dedicated mining ships are The Rokh (BS) and Osprey (cruiser), both Caldari.
2) the procurer (a dedicated mining barge) is a step up only if you fly only gallente cruisers (not BS as the Dominix or meghatron do a decent job) or if you need to mine ice.
If not waith 1-2 days and train for a retriever (the middle sized mining barge) while aiming for the Covetor and Exumers (Tech 2 mining barges).

The Vexor is one of the better mining cruisers, once you get your drone skills up and running... the bonuses to mining drones are quite impressive. Gallente spec-ops pilots start with L5 drones, L4 gall frig and L3 SSC, and can therefore directly train Gallente Cruiser and drone interfacing right after char creation. _

Generally until you get into a barge you want to mine in a mining frigate or a mining cruiser. These are the ones with a mining bonus from your skill.
Train up Mining IV and get some Miner IIs as well while you work on your barge skills.
As for ore thieves, there are two ways to totally avoid them!
1) Mine in mission areas (Unauthorized Military Presence is pretty common from security agents and spawns a huge lowend asteroid field, lots of others spawn big veld-only fields). Can thieves look for easy targets, they'll never bother probing you down. Someone looking to steal salvage might, but they're pretty uncommon outside of lv. 4 agent systems.
2) Mine in gravimetric exploration sites. This requires a significant SP investment and has its own hazards but the fields you find are of much higher quality than the regular belts in the same system.

Right, totally forgot it. I trained drones later than that.
From what I know industrial gallente characters don't start with good drone skills.
