Edited by: armaspy on 16/10/2007 09:03:41 What does it take to take down a untanked hauler in high sec?
Just tried it with 2 caracals with 2 x BCU and all faction heavies and failed miserably :(
any tips? :)

depends on the ship.
dont know why u failed with u cruisers, you sure it was untanked? also what sec status was it? were there any concord at the gate already etc.
pick a gate with no concord 0.5 or 0.6 space scan n pop everyone thinks that the best ones are on the highways, but thats the place most people watch out now, you get better hauler spawns in back routes now as people think there more "safe" there.

Yeh was in 0.6 with no CONCORD around.
Only got off 3 volleys total though. Didn't even dent his armor. Guess he must have been tanked :(
Are caracals the best cruiser to go for?

u sure it was a hauler and not a transport :)
2 caracals should have been ok i would have presumed.
iv done it in a Heavy missile ferox, and a blaster brutix and un tanked hauler die in about 1 volly from the brutix and 2 from the ferox.
never tried 2 cruisers but i would have thought compairable dps from 2 caracals as 1 ferox

Yeh it was a badger :(
Not sure what im doing wrong then. Don't really want to go for a BC considering the certainty of death :(

Do you need much sp in gunnery etc to succeed?

well i would assume so, thats a good point im going by my stats which i admit are high in gunnery.
and if you fully fit out a Brutix for example, when it pops you lose about 6 mil after insurance.
i fit all gank setup, no reps or armour mods at all.

Maybe next time do some test runs on some typical configurations with a corp mate first. Yes you risk losing some ISK to refitting the ship, but it's cheaper to replace a target dummy than a gankship. If you know how many volleys it takes and (based on your previous attempts) how many volleys you have before CONCORD interferes you can decide if you have enough ganking power to blast your prey before you turn into a pod yourself.
And if you want to do it REALLY on the cheap, try it out on SiSi |

Edited by: abbagabba on 16/10/2007 12:43:18 Saw a couple of caracals do this very easily yesterday and I take down anything up to a lightly tanked blockade runner/Cruiser in my Brutix (less than 1M SP in Gunnery). Something must have gone wrong if the hauler was definitely untanked. I'd say suck it up and give it another go as there is gold in them there haulers.
You might want some tank on your Caracal as the gate guns will probably kill you before CONCORD arrive, play around and find the right balance between surviving the gate guns and dealing damage. I fit a single Invul field and a DC to my Brutix but they are definitely not needed for industrials. I don't even bother to deploy drones normally as they are not needed for most targets. Personally with the cost of a BC being so cheap (6M or so) and the profit potential being so high I think you have got to be better using a single man for the job. Other can scoop or scan and you are using your manpower more efficiently imo.
Biggest risk is someone stealing your loot and if you are lurking on the gate for hours before then this is a real possibility. Probably the most lucrative profession for an out of the box toon is to hang around on the right gates and steal suiciders' loot!
I've never understood the attraction of Caracal's for this work as the raw dps seems quite low with missiles. Excellent against shuttles and frigs as you know you are not going to miss (I have lost a Brutix chasing after a frigate, since then I always have a MWD on manual, one pulse, target ,web/scramble/kablammo) but you are surely better with a close range damage ship vs haulers. Use the final warning box to make sure the hit is looking good before committing.
Saw some guys fail the other day with my scanner pilot, could have been you tbh. If so, don't worry, I got him on the next gate ;)

If you're doing it in a pair, maybe sic a couple shield bots on each other. Combat drones, though fast, will have a serious reduction from the flight time. ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |

I highly doubt those bots would have enough time to make noticeable difference. Concord have h4x guns :)
OP: the key to success is information about your target, and intimate knowledge about your own destructive capabilities.
To quote Yoda (IIRC): "DO - there is no try" - since concord always come out on top anyway.

Should've worked, took down an Iteron V a while ago with 3 caracals, one volley each with heavies.
