How do you 0.0 dwellers who mine for a living make a decent profit (as compared to ratters etc)?
Sure, the ores yield massive amounts of very valuable minerals, but... any buy orders that exist for minerals in most 0.0 areas are a mere fraction of what you could earn in Highsec.
Then there's the transportation issue; a Carrier only has ~3000m3 of cargo space, most of which is taken up by fuel requirements for the trip, so it isn't really viable for hauling massive quantities of minerals. On the other hand, any non-jump capable ship isn't going to make it past any gatecamps.
I understand some alliances offer their miners set prices for minerals so you can sell your produce in that way... but what about the rest?
I'd be interested to hear how you make your living.

Several reasonably simple ways:
1. Most obvious: You haul it outta there. Get a hauler with wc stabs and a cloak. Get an alt to scout for you (or a corp member for escort). Have them go about 1 - 2 jumps in front of you. This will help you avoid most gatecamps + the wc will help you avoid solo noob low-sec pirates.
2. If you have access to ore compression you use that and then haul (see #1)
3. Build stuff on site, because lets face it... if you're that far from empire that hauling out is not profitable/dangerous, then hauling stuff in is no picnic either... thus you can make some $
Overall though, mining is neither glamorous, nor does it compare too favorably with ratting due to logistics of hauling stuff out (+ ratting gives you a chance to make a crapload of money if you're lucky). If logistics is not your cup-o-tea, it may be easier to stick to ratting and whip your hulk out for corp/alliance mining ops only.

a carrier takes well over 40k m3 with ship maintenance array holding a loaded itty 5, mining makes more than ratting in the long run

You build stuff like Ravens and Megathrons and modules to fit them with, and sell those to your alliance mates. Ships and modules are usually in demand, in short supply, and fetch a higher-than-empire price for the convenience of being available out there where it's needed.
