I'm the exploring type. Nothing makes me happier than zooming around and checking out sectors. In Eve that's very difficult due to the lack of ability to free warp. What I am suggesting is that you make a shuttle that has the ability to free warp. Make it so that it has no cargo, no weapons mounts, minimal shields that way people aren't using it to carry stuff around.

'free warp'? do you mean jump?
All ships can warp, sorry, I do not understand.
I roleplay... there is this computer game called "Earth - The First Genesis" where i play a character in the early 21st century. |

Go play Earth and Beyond. Free warp is warping without a destination. EVE was never made for this... just think about it.

Current EVE lore states that warping locks onto a becon and/or large gravitational object for exit reference.
Perhaps there will be a technological upgrade in the future though.

Eve was never made to warp without a destination? Explain this to me. How exactly is one supposed to find things way out in the middle of nowhere if there is no free warp? By flying normal speed?

Easy. Warping requires a rather large radius for your scanner to lock onto something. That's why you can warp to belts, planets, stations, beacons (those are designed for a warp to when a large radius is not found) etc.
The way the game works is warp drive is set up to execute an exact destination, from A to B and so you can't warp from A to nowhere within 15km/20km/30km/40km/60km. Even if they made this, what would you do? There is nothing in space to explore for the most part. I see this as a way to set up a safe point, that would be the only thing gained from this.

So your telling me that when the people first arrived in Eve they had to know where they were going in order to warp there? How did anyone ever find anything? What your also telling me is that even though the sectors in Eve are huge they might as well not be as you can't really go anywhere in them?

What we're telling you is that this is a game, and it's played by CCP rules. They don't want free warp to be in the game, so it isn't.
There are ways to find stuff that's not sufficiently radar-marked to allow you to warp to it; they involve using the range and direction features on the scanner. But I've never yet worked out how to do it, so you'll have to get advice on that from someone else.

Edited by: Meer on 24/02/2004 17:24:22 Well the next question is why don't the devs want free warp in the game for explorers to use?
Or is this like most other games where the exploration aspect is forgotten while the rest of the game advances?

This can be done by scanning at maximum range, and reducing the range gradually, until you find the exact distance. Then you use directional scanning to find the direction it is in. Then warp to each object in that direction and repeat the process, until you find a planet/moon/belt which is close to it (a few hundred Km). But there isn't any way to get to objects in open space, that's impossible.
Even if you could free warp, the chances of coming out anywhere near something something would be infinitesimal
I agree that exploration needs some attention in this game, but i dont think free warp is a very good idea, it wouldn't work like it did in EnB

T think it would be nice to be able to warp 2au ina chosen direction without destination. That way you can get to places like safespots.
