1. If a system has 10+ podkills in the last hour, its best to, uh, not go through that system .
2. If all else fails, slam the MWD.
3. See pirates in the local channel? Warp to the planet nearest to the gate and directional scan it .
4. If a pirate is sitting at the gate and just won't leave... it never hurts to log until later .
5. If you're stupid enough to warp right to a gate with a ship full of minerals without scanning for pirates, they deserve to get your ore--they're smarter than you.
6. If you're mining in a belt and you see anything that looks big and nasty, it probably is.
7. Don't worry... no matter how far seperated your minibelt is, the archangels will still warp to you.
8. The belt without rats will never have arkanon or bistot... ever.
9. Your industrial won't get killed until you just spent an hour filling it with spodumain.
10. When you're trying to find your way back into empire space, avoiding the podkill systems takes the exact number of jumps as you have bistot in your hold.

You are forgetting the rule of Molly, bless her little black soul (anyone seen it lately? I have heard rumors she lost it again)

<---is currently alone in a system in a rat-free field (took hours to find it an NO its not a gridbelt) mining spodumain in an indy... only 2 jumps away from a REFINING OUTPOST

Nope. I deserved to die... I broke my own rule. Look at the f*cking map before entering a system and warping to the gate. I was AFK even. I earned money anyway... got my bestower for 375k, paid 50k for insurance, got 500k back... (although I did have a miner 2 on that ship so I sorta lost 25k)

 Serves me right for letting myself get caught by a pirate! I'll just go back to Period Basis... better minerals there anyways, plus there are no PC pirates.

Rule is pretty simple: In all CA claimed regions non CA = KOS

IMO pirates are anyone who kills others in 0.0 space who they aren't at war with. The people who gatecamp are GANKERS, not pirates . The only guys that I have something against are the gankers. They need a life.

heh, so you fly into space "claimed" by an alliance and get killed and you call that pirating?
I call pirating, actively seeking those weaker than yourself in order to destroy their ship and seize their cargo. If a KOS target enters our space, I wouldn't even think about cargo scanning before killing. However, IF (note: IF) I was a pirate, I would cargo scan all targets, if there isn't a decent cargo, the risk is too great for the reward and I wouldn't attack.
Piracy is all about taking the lowest risk for the highest gain :) (IMHO anyway)

Don't forget the uber safespot, just in case you don't already have one.
Pull-up your F11 map. Right click your current solar system, select 'save location'.
Then go to People & Places, find it in the list, right click it and select "warp to".. guaranteed to run your cap dry and put you way, WAY out.. impossible to be found.
In fact, I don't think you ever reach it.. just keep warping and warping and warping... :)

Well... sorta. Usually there are one or two belts in each system without rats at any given time, but sooner or later they'll come around. Doesn't mean you can't get a full refine of bistot before you see them though.

I've gotta agree with those rules. One more: always seperate your local channel from your corp/gang/trade/alliance channel so you can see who is in-system at all times. Once podded, twice wary  -----------------------------------------------
