Im noodling with the idea that sometime next year I get my own POS for personal research and invention. Looking at EvE meep, it would cost roughly 73.1 million a month to fuel the thing, this isnt really that bad of a resource drain even now for me however what I would like to know is how much researching and so forth would be needed to make such a venture profitable. Right now im considering 3 mobile laboratories, using a small tower and have a few guns/missiles for defense.

No idea where you get your fuel costs from (I hope not from buying from sell orders in your target system), but from where I'm standing, you could be looking at anything as low as 40 mil per month, 50 mil tops. Ok, so maybe 70-80 mil is worth the trouble of not having to "import" the fuel from several jumps away, but still...
The thing with researching "and so forth" is how you plan to make your money with it.
If you plan on making copies and selling them, you have to take into account the cost of the BPOs too, which don't come very cheap.
If you plan on having "ME/PE research on demand", you're going to have to struggle with getting orders and filling them in a timely fashion (well, ok, probably not struggle very much, but still).
Also... 3 labs... well, that, as a total number of slots of all kinds available, is way above the capabilities of a single character (max 11 jobs with advanced lab op 5, which I doubt you have), more like 2 or even 3 moderately-skilled chars to keep all slots filled.
Last but not least, POS defences are a joke for any determined attacker in highsec, since he can just deplete your ammo with throw-away newbie ships first then just move in for the kill with total impunity, and you can't control the guns.
If it's in lowsec... well... good luck even TRYING to defend a small tower there all by yourself.
Might as well set it up completely defenseless, might do you exactly the same good... and at least spare you some setup cost and fuel usage for the grid... it's a risk, but unless you bug the wrong people... meh, shouldn't be a big problem.

But flying shuttles, condors or somesuch can't.
Matter of fact, a single skilled interceptor pilot can almost certainly deplete most/all your ammo without ever actually being in any grave danger, if he knows what he's doing and scouted your POS out beforehand in his pod (or with an alt), and you didn't plan for exactly such an occurence (almost nobody does).

how could they fly shuttles into it ? they would just bounce off the shield , and if they opened fire on it then concord would have them in highsec
they would have to war dec him and if he is a single player then that would be hard to do

Mine all your own ice, the costs come to a couple or three million a week for a small tower.

A single player cannot launch a POS - it has to be for a corporation.

My intention is to have an alt make a one man corp just to have the POS. I think he was aluding to the fact that wardecing a single alt corp is pointless as there are no targets presented to the enemy and that if someone did wardec such a situation the alt would take down the POS well before the 24 hours was up.
