The lack (?) of CCP comments on this subject is sort of a bad omen. Kind of a small version of the whole see-no-evil-hear-no-evil thing before and around Incarna deployment. |

1MN Catalyzed Cold-Gas Arcjet Microwarpdrive 10MN Y-T8 Overcharged Hydrocarbon Microwarpdrive
That-¦s how it should have been done... easier to find now, if you were that new to eve that you wouldn-¦t recognize them anyway, but still rad names and not those abominations. "You either need less science fiction or more medication."

ItGÇÖs easy for us older players to lament the loss of the individual names, because we have all memorised them so that it had become second nature to us.
However I am still able to remember being the new guy and being completely bamboozled by everything having to be different, different names, different mods, no continuity. If I was back in that position, I'm pretty sure I'd be of the opinion that this is the best change ever.

If CCP is trying to optimize by creating simpler names for people to recognize what the module is, then why not go one step further and rename themselves so players know who they are dealing with?
CCP Developer CCP Forum Moderator CCP Marketing CCP Programmer CCP Quality Assurance
etc., etc. At least then when one posts to the forums and states something, we players will be able to determine just how much pull that CCP person will have based on their simple naming system.

Ah yes - I have a little bitter memories about them. Having supplied a ~60-80 man lowsec corp with modules, I usually had quite a few on stock when CCP suddenly changed the loot tables and they dropped from being 8-11 mill/piece to 100k until I next logged in (had to attend a meeting abroad, so didn't log in for a few days).
Wait - I just checked the market and all meta 1-4 were merged into meta 3?
I just thought they dumbed the names down, but...*Yuck!* morons- sting like a butterfly and-ápost like a bee. |

I can see why they did the naming for those items so searching would come up...but I still dont like it. Strength isnt measured in numbers but in force of will. For if one motived willful individual stands many will fall around him that are weak.

Either way I do have to agree that the old names are bad becuase they had no progression I mean how in the heck do I go from arc jets to hydrocarbons to rocket boosters?
The new names are bad too they show progression but no creativity.
I call for creative names with progression in them.

I like the fact that the size and the basic item name (Microwarpdrive) is in the name. But the new names make them sound like they're even below t1. "10MN Limited.." Limited what? Being of limited use? They're definately not Limited Edition.
"10MN Y-T8 Overcharged Hydrogen Microwarpdrive" <- would have been more awesome.
But well, leave it be. Name changes will just leave tons of Killboards broken until someone gets around updating from database dumps. :S |

These new names aren't based. Y-T8's were once the swagged out prop modules for everything cruiser... then the drop rate for them increased so much they were on everyone's ship. Now they don't even exist. How the mighty have fallen.

Yes, I concur with most of the people here. Bring my beloved Y-T8 MWD back.
However, I do like how the change made it easier to search for items by their size class.
So, As a compromise, I would accept a Y-T8 10MN Microwarp drive :P (or something to that effect -- experimental is far too long a word anyway as it has to wrap into a 2nd line in icon view. |

I think it was a job well done AND they could have gone further imo, like including the meta information in the name. So much of my time is separating the crap from the good stuff that I applaud change.

I agree with most here, the grammatical choices of the new naming convention is confusing.
What is being limited? What effect does the limitation have on the module?
Just telling existing players the name of module has changed is fine, because we know what it was and what it now is - think about new players next time?
And woe be the people who create tutorials on your behalf and put them on YouTube, now they all have to be re-done. Grats!

So, what size was the Y-T8 again?
Nah, just kidding. It was a cool name, but better to fit in a hint to the module size and quality somewhere.
Look at turret modules for reference. You have either the gun caliber or keywords like "light" "medium" "heavy" "mega" to identify the module size, and a slightly more understandable way to figure out its meta level "modal" "prototype" etc are meta 4, "limited" and erm...some other stuff were meta 1. I think with a bit more work they could keep the cool names and still make it clear what a thing is. |

I can actually suggest a step ahead - let's rename all mods into something like 'em hardener meta-11' w00t? 2008, CCP Zulu(park): "command ships are fine as is" 2011, CCP Greyscale: "is the Nighthawk actually underpowered?" Nice progress, guys. |

I assume they mean limited as in limited edition. I don't know how that makes them more efficient.
Personally I like the idea of consolidating names like they did with the missiles, but they could have kept the tech jargon names and still made it easy to tell the level. All they had to do was as the 1MN - 100MN to every mod name and there would be no problem. New Favorite Eve Hobby: Bumping BS's with a Crow. |
