Many users are plagued with a horrible curse--bad ISPs. A friend of mine, Rhericlya, is quitting the game for 3 months (at which time he will get DSL) as he has lost something like 6 cruisers and 2 industrials to disconnects alone.
Here's how to fix this. Whenever a player quits without clicking the quit button (i.e. it could be an ISP problem), instantly traceroute them from the server. If the traceroute hits a link that is down before it reaches the player's computer, their ship instantly disappears. If tracerouting takes too long for that, then their ship is reimbursed.
Now this won't solve the kind of disconnects that originate from the computer itself, as those are indistinguishable from the player yanking out the phone wire, which could be used to fake a disconnect. (Ctrl-alt-delete/close/etc can be detected from within EVE).

Why? Its not abusable, as you can't really go to NTW HQ and pull out the cables to disconnect your machine...

he means that if the eve cluster can`t ping/traceroute the client isp his ship is removed from space immidiatly, if the eve cluster can ping/traceroute the client isp, his ship stays in space.
this still leaves us with the ctd issue

pulling out your network/net access would do exactaly this and the ship would be gone. The traceroute would never reach the computer and say it was a router thing - when it wasn't.

Imagine the servers doing 2000+ ICMP ping/tracert every minute to all the guys that just quit for the day the easy way, instalog to avoid any sorts of troubble etc ... This idea would probably increase the connection problems by having CCP DOS itself checking for "dissapearing" connections
If you have a really bad ISP it isn't really CCP's job to implement features to check if there is a true loss of connection or a quick logoff... Just isn't practical i.m.o

Yes this is a great idea, this way my ship will always disappear immediatly as my ISP blocks all incoming ICMP pings and tracert attempts.

Also, remember that most disconnects in the DSL world are between the DSLAM (phone company CO) and the end user. The ISP is still "online". The player's crappy line has just untrained.

Edited by: Omniwar on 25/02/2004 06:37:59 All last year I was on Microwave antenna 4mb connection, My antenna often lost connection with the main antenna so if I would disconnect EVE could still ping my ISP server so no good.
Now I have 1.5mb hardline connection (ADSL, Broadband?) and last night the town I live in had some hardline phone problems so I keept loosing internet connection forcing me to stop playing online for the reminder of the night , my ISP server is in Icelandic capital and when I called them the morning after they knew of no problems on their side, so again no good.
Peaple who loose connection for some reason will be made to suffer for those who log off. Spawn of the Devil

Ruindar has a point. I also use DSL and get this problem. Just recently I had to fail a mission and miss 5 days of skill training cause of line failure.
However, I think the important thing to understand is that there are much more people logging off to avoid death than those who get CTDs and other problems. This isn't beta anymore. Crashes are not so frequent. You gotta choose which group you wanna support and which group gets screwed. Choose the lesser evil, screw the minority. heh
