Hi, I'm still a fairly newb miner and after reading the gread Guide's and information in the Forums, I have one big question. Is there a preferred/optimal progression to skill up? I'm sitting here looking at a minimum of 9 skills that I need to skillup and want to get the most bang for my isk while training. Any help would be greatly appreciated, or point me to a post I missed. Thank you Remember - Wherever you go, there you are. |

Halada's guide walks a new miner through the steps to progress up to a hulk. Ideally you want to get mining to IV first, so you can mine in a cruiser with Miner IIs. Your next step is to train astrogeology and mining barge to III I believe. This lets you pilot a retriever, and because you have mining IV, you can use the necessary strip miners. From there you are looking at close to two months worth of training between Mining barge to V and Astrogeology to V, however once completed its Hulk time!

Ok then, to answer my own question, I read the Guide again and took better notes. Here is what I came up with.
Caldari Frigate 1 - 2 Mining 1 Caldari Frigate 3 - 4 Minmatar Frigate 1 - 3 * Suggested Hauler - skip if you want Minmatar Industrial 1 - 4 * Hauler - skip if you want Refining 1 - 4 * Only if you are refining your own ore but good to have Caldar Cruiser 1 - 3 Spaceship Command 1 - 3 Electronics 1 - 5 * to help fit the most miners Mining Upgrades 1 - 4 Astrogeology 1 - 4 Caldari Cruiser 4 Mining 5 Mining Barge 1 - 4 Industry 1 - 5 Astrogeology 5 Mining Barge 5
There's what I got outta my research. Of course you don't have to follow the Caldari or Minmatar, but that's up to you. Remember - Wherever you go, there you are. |

Personally I suggest finding a better trade like maybe ratting with a frigate while training straight for a barge. By the time you get one, which should only be 15 days max if you do it right, you should have enough to get yourself a Retriever and some strips. ------------------------------ ~ AKA Josh ~ - Battleclinic Staff Developer - ------------------------------

If you're going to mine in a cruiser a Scythe / Osprey are the suggested ones, everything else is damn painful. If you're purely going for mining you can skip a cruiser and head right for a mining barge, though generally it's nice to get in a cruiser :).
Astrogeology and Mining are then the 2 skills you really need, + I guess these days Mining Upgrades (starts the 'back in my day speech')...
Hauling if you're mining solo is fairly necessary, if you're mining in a group you can usually be more effective early on in a hauler than you can in a cruiser/barge.

My only hesitancy with this is the fact I'm Gallente and wondering how much(don't have EveMon with me at work) time it will take me to train the other Racials to get where I need to be, as opposed to just training the Gallente ones up and not having the Optimal Ship.
Also, I'm making my list just as a list to follow while I do train other things as well. So you could say it's my mid-term goal not necessarily short-term. Remember - Wherever you go, there you are. |

Dont bother cross training minmatar and caldari, you will spend more time doing that then actually training for the barge. Heres what you should do. First, get to the retriever. Your going to need Astrogeology and Mining Barge to III (im pretty sure) and Mining to IV (strip miners). As said above, it should be about two weeks. Once you get your barge, you can get an iteron Mk.III/IV, (gallente have the best hauler in game(Iteron V))and then start training for your covetor/hulk. You can get a cruiser, but if you are serious about mining, save the money for the barge because it will mine a lot more.

Mining V Astrogeology V Industry V Refining V Refinery Efficiency IV+ (V is not really necessary with ore specific skills) Mining Barge V Exhumers IV+ (As high as you can go) Ore specific skills IV (Plagioclase processing, etc.) Ice Harvesting V Ice Processing IV
For 0.0: Metallurgy IV+ (Preferably V) 0 Sec Ore specific skills (Ark processing, etc.) Energy Systems Operations V Energy Management IV Engineering IV+ (Preferably V) Specific Shield Compensations IV Shield Operation V Shield Management IV Jury Rigging III (Can go higher but T1 rigs are good enough)
I may have missed a few things, but that should give you an idea of what you'll need. ------------------------------ ~ AKA Josh ~ - Battleclinic Staff Developer - ------------------------------

Don't forget the learning skills ofcourse. For mining, int and memory are the most important ones I think.

You can also drop some of the Shield skills if you intend never to solo mine with your Hulk (as you already have a fighting char that can tank for him), but Hulk can tank rats if you fit some expensive mods... (or fit a tank cheaply and take a big hit on yield by not having Mining Upgrades)
