With the new spawning system in 0.0 with rats appearing in large mixed fleets and using Tech 2 stuff, it's not easy for a small corp or even a solo player to obtain any rare loot other than from the market and to be honest, most of us are priced out.
So with Cruisers now appearing in 0.4 space and lower, couldn't there be rarer loot dropped by the rats in these systems. Now I don't expect counterbalanced's or Arbalests to be dropped but how about the cheaper alternatives. Currently, when I've hunted in 0.4 - 0.1, all I get is basic stuff and the occasional Shield Hardener.
For example, the other day I was hunting in a 0.2 system and took out a 3 Thorax 2 Celestis and multiple Tristan spawn and all I got in loot was a couple of ECCM modules, basic OD, a standard shield hardener and a damage control unit (as well as some other basic stuff). As I was fighting in a Moa, I was lucky to survive this encounter and the money I got from recycling that didn't even cover my repairs. Hardly a just reward for taking down a four Cruisers and multiple Frigates.
I'd be interested to know what other people think. It seems unfair of CCP to increase the toughness of the rat spawns in Empire space yet not increase the loot they drop proportionally.

The problem is, is that then rare loot would no longer be rare.

Rare loot drops just fine in empire, but it's RARE, not getting anything worth millions when you take out a single spawn is hardly a reason for concern about loot drops.
And your reward is their bounties loot is extra and is sometimes really cool, the fact that you went in over your head and managed to take considerable damage, without repair modules close by, is your own fault, and hardly a reason to make RARE loot drop more commonly. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

Like I said, there is rare and then there is rare.

I did not get in over my head. I only took about 45% armour damage.
I'm simply suggesting that the loot drops be proportional to the type of spawn. I fully agree and would be against anything worth millions dropping in Empire, I'm thiking more along the lines of high end Tech 1 stuff in 0.4 - 0.3 and then the next tier of items (those only just better then stock items) dropping in 0.2 - 0.1 the the next level in border 0.0 etc. Obviously the rarest items should be hard to come by and require a lot of risk and resource.

I used to spam frigate spwans in 0.4 space before the constant spawns got nerfed. I'd fill my cargo with antimatter, and drag my blaster thorax to the nearest belt. I would just sit there, at the belt marker (where they all used to spawn) and just rip them to shreds. and because I killed them all within pickup range, I would empty the cans as they appeared around me, and load them into my own can. on average, I would get around 4000m3 of loot per trip, and one time, over 10,000m3. This would be between 200 and 500 frigates.
They *did* drop rares (mostly rare EW/ECM stuff) but I couldn't guarantee that, from 200 rats, I would get anything at all, besides basic modules and crap. 80% of these rats would drop a civ shield booster, for instance.
Saying that though, I haven't tried NPC hunting since castor, and though I understand that it is harder now (no 'farm' spawns) but the bounties are better.
The rare stuff should still be rare though.
And you should never *expect* to get any rares if you kill less than 50 ships per outing. Most rares have about a 0.5-1% chance of dropping (last time I checked eve-db) so you're looking at 100-200 to really guarantee anything.
good job at taking out that spawn in a moa though :) .

I used the Thorax Spawn as an expample of the type of spawn. I was there for 3 hours and got nothing of any note. Again, I'm not suggesting that the rarest stuff drop in empire otherwise there would be one less reason to visit 0.0. I'm simply suggesting that the loot be proportional to the toughness of the spawn. About the best thing I've had from empire space is an Anointed EM Ward and that was after days of killing.

The question is whether you would rather receive nothing than receive the basic loot you are getting, ie the loot table excludes items below a certain worth/specification for the cruisers, and if you hit those values on your roll there is no can at all, reducing the loot spam?

Edited by: Kathira on 25/02/2004 13:23:06 Haha the best loot I had until now was a bit after I crashed my Tristan and was hunting with my Incursus in a 0.6. I got a spawn of 2 7k and 2 5 k and the reward was a 150 Scout railgun and a 150 compressed coil railgun and a named missile launcher. I took that as a sign to buy a new tristan.

Actually the question I'm asking is not how it works now, rather do you think it's fair that CCP increased the risk in 0.4 - 0.1 without increasing the reward?
I personally think the reward should be directly proportional to the risks involved. I don't expect to get top of the line items fighting teir three Cruisers but I do expect better stuff than I get in 0.8 - 0.5 fighting tier one frigates.

I got 3 locals from 45k-85k cruisers in last 2 weeks of mining in lowe sec systems as well as some 250mm scouts/carbides... So I think drops are just OK. Your Heavy Neutron Blaster II perfectly strikes Serpentis Chief Sentinel, wrecking for 660.4 damage.

I don't think drops justify the risk you take that's all.
For ppl like me that (atm) their only source of income is fighting npc's (I don't mine and I'm fed up with missions and trade) the risks are -almost- too great.
But I think the worse thing comes from no good way to trade the loot besides recycling it...
Believe me I must have been over 500mil richer by now if I didn't melt almost all but the "top" loot I've gotten since release and frankly I think 500mil might be an understatement.
Not to mention how pi$$ed off I was when they halved my sec rating which was not that high but was hard work and all done after the -very justified- initial npc kill secboost adjustment nerf.

Edited by: Dirtball on 25/02/2004 17:31:47 I got a partial hull from a blood follower, and sometimes they don't even drop containers. I also got a nanoelectrical cpu in a 0.5 system, I can't remember what I was fighting though.
Edit: Partial Hull cargo expander

i got a quad lif too, but it was from a 1mil patriarch
i got a partial hull from a 55k rat in 0.0 a few days ago and a heavy modulated from a 45k rat in 0.1 a week ago
the 45k bloods drop a lot of nice stasis webs, must have 10 X5's and 30 Langours by now.. _____________________________________ Perpetually driven, your end is our beginning. "Can I be a consultant for EVE II?" - WhiteDwarf |

Loot drops do seem kinda random given the types of rat you hit, but I've found that the rats in certain systems tend to give better loot than in other systems.
My theory is that the longer the rats are left alone in a system, the better the loot they are likely to drop when they are finally killed (a bit like roids being left to ripen). Haven't tested this anywhere near as thoroughly as I'd like, so it could be complete balls
And for the record, I picked up a Phased Muon dampener off a frigate rat in 0.3 - a cruiser rat in the same system dropped a 1 MN AB A former corp mate of mine got a top-end expander (27% IIRC) off a 2k rat...

How many of you who have had loot have had it since the last patch when they introduced Cruisers to Empire Space?

Edited by: Malcolm Taro on 25/02/2004 22:46:03 I have found that cruiser type rats tend to drop much better loot than frigates. At least with Guristas. Lately I have been hunting a lot, along with some corpmates in some .3 systems. One specifically has a 3XTerrorist (30K) spawn. It's hella easy for a Moa, and the drops aren't too bad. They drop much better loot than frigates, and you can even get the occasional Arbalest Heavy Launcher. The money from bounties alone is well worth it, to be honest, the drops are just a nice bonus.

The stuff I talked about is all post-patch - the Phased Muon I picked up yesterday.
The system I hit has Serpentis and the frigates tend to drop better loot than the cruisers (or maybe just appear to do so because the cruisers spawn infrequently).
