I have played many MMORPG's within the last few tears and enjoy playing them very much. But for some reason, and i am pretty sure its just me, I cant see why this game is so popular and so seemingly addictive. I had an account about 4 months ago but deactivated it after a week. i thought the combat was a bit boring, i.e. watching your ship fire lasers at someone elses didnt seem very interesting to me at all. The victor just seemd to be the person who had spent the most time, once again, watching their ship fire lasers at a rock to extract ore to sell, to buy bigger weapons. I fully admit that I am missing something here and i am desperate for someone to point it out for me. Any other interesting ways of gaining money and is there to more to combat than i've seen? Just curious what it is about this game everyones raving about.
Thanks

Edited by: PrimalFear on 25/02/2004 15:41:36 Well there really isn't a hype about it I mean just by itself the graphics are stunning enough I have to admit from some of the other MMOGs that I have recently played only to FFXI. Most of the people that play are usualy close friends, the mining gets really interesting when you out below .5 security space maybe thats why you don't have much fun mining. But anyway who cares I just its just great game and have fun every time I log on.

Edited by: khainestar on 25/02/2004 16:22:14 Edited by: khainestar on 25/02/2004 15:47:29 There are other ways to gain money. However none of them cost as little as mining.
Freight. Some stations sell for a cheap price while others will buy the same item for a higher price.
Hunting. You can turn a tidy profit from kitting up a ship and going hunting. NPC's to start with and Player Pirates later.
Bounty Hunting. I put this seperately because you don't have to be a pirate to have a bounty on your head.
Manufacturing. You can buy blueprints, mine the ore then manufacture items to sell. (I have found that I can manufature my own ammo/weapons/items for far less than I could buy it.) This also goes into the trading area. You make them yourself and sell them cheap to undercut all the competion.
Agents. You can complete missions set by agents to get rewards of ISK, items, implants, and other stuff too.
As for combat it can seem that the biggest gun wins. But that is not always the case. I have taken on a couple of NPC's that were a lot bigger than me and won due to keeping away from them and using hit and run tactics. Your abilites in the skill department can improve your kill rate too. If you invest in long range attacks and sharp shooting skills you can hit some one from far outside there normal range. Theres also ECM and ECCM to take into account. How can 3 frigates kill a battleship. Web it, warp disrupt it then float far to close to be shot at and batter it into submission. Its not fool proof but it can be done.
Theres also the corps that you can join. Mining is a lot less boring if you can have a chat while you are doing it.
Theres something else you seem to have missed and thats the RP element. Some people like to role play the entire game. Have a look in the intergalactic summit forum for examples of this.
I don't think that in your week of playing you have been able to see everything on offer.
Hope this gives you some more ideas for playing. Maybe you can come back and have a longer go.
edit: I forgot about agents

Pain. Looks great on other people. Its what there for. |

After 1 year of playing DaoC it was geting quite boring to have smacking up mobs to gain higher lvl. That¦s maby the ting i like best whit EVE. That you get results more effective and in many ways in various fields. A little fighting, a little economic and market trading, a little evolutionary construction. And the world is constant groving whit only the limit of our and the gamemakers fantasy."Okey maby there is a slight limitation in bandwith and hardware " For last i thing the graphics make me as i Si-Fi freek more at home.

It takes quiet a while to learn how to have fun in Eve. sitting yourself fighting 2k rats or mining scord is numbing boring. Quiet different if you are 20 people running a big mining operations, pirates are hunting your cargo with 400mil of mega. so you have to be very clever when moving around and having the correct defences. Also just managing the whole operation, talking to buyers, getting new ships etc will keep you very bussy. So join with some friends or a good corp and you will have far more fun. I have found that ninja mining is very interesting. Meaning mining very rare ore far out in dangerous space.
You can always check out us at DreamScape DreamScape

The main reason why im still playing is the community and friends you make when playing this game.

Because space is fun. Lol...
I gota agree with everyone here. If you want more action trying to mine some rarer ores gets really interesting... especially when pirates start firing long range missles. Eep.
I personally love the econimy. No one will remember but at the launch of eve (i had a different character) I really had cornered the market for first level non starter ships, only held it for a week or so untill I got some good competition. But for that week if you were buying low priced ships then they were from me.
Combat is bad at the start... but what game isnt like that?' Remember EQ? at level one you spend what feels like forever Watching : Miss miss miss hit miss miss miss miss hit hit. ooo. But just think of when your firing missles. stuff like that is awesome and takes a lot more strategy. Not to mention watching things like your guns/ammo ranges and range fall off, damage type, learning what ship could be vunerable to what type of damage.
Now a days corps can start to take over pc stations even I think, that would be fun to really have a home base that you need to defend or lose.
There really are a lot of different ways to play this game AND become an awesome powerful player. Other games (in my mind) cant really say that.
Best wishes.

Well, Phoibos...Dreamscape seems like a really nice corp. I studied your website and read about what you were doing and I thought it sounded exciting, but guess what?
I was not allowed to join you!
I've played Eve for about two months and I agree with Aertex that there's not much to be excited about really. I've tried the mining, the agents, the combat, the trading and so on, but it's pretty boring to go solo. I was hoping to join a good corp and be of use to someone. I could do mining or whatever stuff you wanted of me. I wanted to join Dreamscape, and waited two weeks for the disappointing reply.
I'm going to cancel my Eve account now and move to another game instead. Sorry...

Sibylla dont cancel it man! I see people in lots of games after playing for a bit want to join good guilds, factions, corps! Why dont you join small corp and help to get that corp big, powerfull and try to make it THE BEST! Thats what this game is about.I am disapointed with people who want all the best stuff NOW!Just remember when this game came out someones put alot of work to make their Corp good and big.

well, how I see it is that if you play alone, you will never know the full greatness of eve. I think that the community is the biggest part. Its a very stratigic game. I would say that you really need to get one of your chara's into a good corp to experance eve at its best, then you can appriciate having a solo chara, where you can build your own life up. But definatly play with other people. There is nothing more satifing than escorting convoy, scouting an area for a corp you are a war with. Stratigic military strikes.
EvE is not a combat simulator, although I think the combat is worked out very well. Nothing more satifiying that getting your first 200+ railgun hit on a roid belt rat. lol

One way to have fun with EVE from the start is to communicate. It is IMHO mandatory to RTFM, ie. the 'EVE New Players Guide" & all the info you get during both tutorial and the agent missions. This takes approx. 3 hours.
Then pay attention to your newbie corp channel. The one I'm in is very welcoming and user-friendly. If I'm outgunned, I holler for assistance...people are happy to help.
During my first week of EVE, I've ganged up with a total of eight other players in combat, either doing agent missions or hunting pirates. They are, in a sense, my brothers in arms. So, you can build up a network, which means you are not alone in space... --------------------- ...thi starz ¢ moovd |

The Crielere thing, loads of torpedoes and Battleships going BOOM - great fun. Sometimes I think I'm only playing to see that again. like being in a really long film

Edited by: Lentia on 27/02/2004 19:03:24 I find the political development quite interesting. This content is really entirely player driven. The way people group together into various corporation each with thier own agendas, philosophies and playing styles. And the way these corps have bound together into ever-changing Allinaces to protect thier regional interests and try and develop military strategies to protect thier borders. Really quite fascinating. I have never seen a MMPOG with this degree of free market economy and large scale regional strategic role playing.

I find no reason to HAVE to be in a corp. And Thats what I love about this game. The choices you have. 2 days after starting a character, I have the skills (boughten not trained yet) and the money to get an indy, a probe, and a rifter (my spelling might be off) to get them insured and decently outfitted.
Its true that I might get into a corp latter on but the game for me is awesome playing solo (i still chat with locals and the starter corp so its not lonly at all)
Best Wishes!
