I have been running a amd 3800 dual core, 1 gig of ram and a 7600gs videocard for a little over a year and I have been pretty content. With X-mas coming up I am thinking of upgrading especially with dx10 being new. I don't want Vista but I do want a dx10 card for when Vista gets it's act together.
What would be a good card in the 200-300 range and I assume it will work with xp and dx9 games?
How much longer will my processor hold out? It seems to be fine with BF2 and F.E.A.R. and most other games.

Which currency are we talking here? Personally I think you need another gig of ram.

On the 29th, NVIDIA is releasing the 8800 GT for around $250 US. Grab that one. Also, grab another gigabyte of ram.

Edited by: Mr Friendly on 24/10/2007 03:12:19 I'd wait a bit for the next-gen dx10 cards to come out, tbh. The 9 series nvidia is supposed to be coming out quite soon (and I assume the same holds true for the ati).
So, the current dx10 cards will price crash and you'll have more options for the `300 $ range at better performance levels.
If you must buy one now, look at the 8800 gt/gts type, and try to get the 640 meg ram version for more longevity (I don't know about ati specifically, but feel fairly confident ati still doesn't match nvidia for the perf at the same price). The 320 meg is running into hig-res aa/af memory size issues already on a couple of brand new games (the one that springs to mind is a rts game with tremendous unit numbers on screen each of which are anti-aliased with af (so, not really that indicative of most games), but does point to the limitations of 'only' 320 megs on board).
That said, oblivion, bioshock, hl2:2 and tabula rasa run really nicely at very near/maxed settings in 1680 rez, so I don't regret buying my 8800gts 320 meg one little bit.

Edited by: Max Morrel on 24/10/2007 04:59:26 The 9 series isn't coming out for months. The next thing coming out is 8800 GT and the new 8800 GTS. DO NOT buy a video card now, wait until the 29th at least. The 8800 GT is more powerful than the current 8800 GTS, and is a lot less expensive. The new 8800 GTS will be more powerful than the 8800 GT but will probably be priced in the $350+ range.

Or pay about half as much, build it yourself, and actually know what is in there.
