Hi,
a question to the CCP art team. The V3 project is done for Caldari and Gallente. I like it alot for most of the ships. But some of them look quite a bit 'stale' and don't really fit to the new ones like the Raven, Naga or Tengu. Imo this isn't a problem of textures and shaders. The models of some ships are rather blocky or just strange. IMHO some examples are Moa, Badger, Condor, Griffin.
My question: even if the retexturing for Caldari is finished..is it still planned to replace some of these older hulls with new, shiny models?
Thanks for any hint. |

I dare you to touch the Griffin and Moa lines. They are last remains of Caldari design mindset "it doesnt matter what it looks like, as long as it works in vacuum of space." Imho nerfing scorp to be symmetrical was bad enough. I have nothing against updating shaders or upping textures to higher res, I do however have everything against radically changing the silhouette of existing ships.
I got afraid of the new direction with tier 2 bc's, when new sleeker and more polished "nice looking" ships came out from all 4 races. This is supposed to be game about crude space combat, where speed, utility and turret hardpoints decide outcome. Not "who has the most symmetrical and polished paintjob of the month" contest. I was willing to let it slide, but when they started to change and *fix* existing silhouettes I knew I had feared rightly.
The thing is that people get attached to the ships they fly, now Moa or it's variant Eagle sees very little use, very very little. But still it can raise uproar when someone suggest changing it's visuals around. Both for and against people go "oh god it's horrible" "it's great." That is proof of good design because it has people form strong feelings about it.
Imho if art department wants to reskin en-masse, they should start kicking the "paintjob" station service forward, where you can pay npc's isk (isk sink) and be able to choose new ship skin for your existing one. Vanilla raven with golem textures etc is easy to implement, but making the necessary filler of new variant of paintjobs could keep them very busy for years. The good side? Nobody would be forced to new looks, people could *choose* to pay small along sp skillbook amount of isk to enjoy it. |

I'm no art dude but as stated in carious blogs and posts the priority now ship wise is to get all the amarr and matari ones V3ed. I'm sure that if they'd all happily work on redoing ships if time allows but they are pretty busy right now and there are always more things to be V3ed like cap ships, stations, stargates and whatnot.

CCP should read this a few times and heed it.

Thanks for your response. I'm very happy to hear you plan to retexture stargates and stations as well! Regarding my question on new models for some ships: I know other tasks have more priority. Amarr and Minmatar on top. I just wanted to know if it's even considered to re-do some older Caldari hulls at all and make them on-par with the newer hulls.
Ivan Joukov wrote: Needing Amarr / Matar new shaders first.
As said, no problems with priority. Amarr and Minmatar hulls are next ofc.

I can only speak of my own opinion. Ofc it's a matter of taste. I just think some hulls could get an update. Compare the Tengu or the new Raven with a Moa or Badger. I'm not talking about the shape at all. Just look the round edges of the Tengu or the tiny red lights on the new Raven or on the Naga. Such details matter imho. The Moa has sharp edges and looks quite blocky and simple that's why. Same for the Badger. Check the thrusters on the bottom. Incomparable to the new Raven or the new Scorp. |

I think they are more likley to work on the models for entirely new ships than bother re-constructing older models.
But I agree, how some of these models ever got through into the game is beyond me. Several people must have had a meeting looked at the ship designs created saw the imicus model of the moa and said "oh yea, this looks good, go with that! The players are going to love it"
So, I think its just something to do with Icelandic people tbh, I suspect the ginger gene has something to do with.

Yes but things like that are matter of increasing the resolution of the skin and it's shader. Ofc this means more pinpoint accuraty and the skin mesh will change, but drastic changes like Scorp comparision are out of question imho. The whole silhouette of the ship was changed, that's akin to someone from your car manufacturing company coming over, installing big ass spoiler at your car without confirming it from you just because "they thought it looked cooler." No check that, they come even when you protested against it, thankfully in real life you could get rid of the spoiler yourself, with eve you're stuck with whatever big changes to looks are decided.
If however CCP had implented some form of ship paintshop station service, where in return of isk, you could "pimp your ship skin" for new scorp model (pure look change, nothing else for couple mil isk) people would have much less trouble with it. Offered change results in greater customer happiness compared to forced change. I hope if CCP didnt see it earlier, the current user numbers for captain quarters compared to station hangar speak volumes...

Speaking of V3 skins and Ravens, I notice the new skin for the Raven looks pretty low-res, all the windows and stuff are blurry. This is also visible to a lesser extent on other Caldari ships. It's kind of annoying, because the older skins looked much sharper. Let's...just assume there's some kind of signature here, 'k? ... ... OH WAIT. Jace Errata on Twitter |

I hope we one day will get stations based on all the pirate factions in game, especially Angel and Sansha stations.
If that isn't possible could we at least get the C shaped Amarr station that has been featured in nearly every official EVE video distributed among the current pool of Amarr stations? Dominique Vasilkovsky Mashie Saldana Monica Foulkes |

I know this may be a pointless request... but could you pass along a request to the art/modeling teams that quite a few of us would like to see the carriers and supercarriers to be made... "larger"? I still find it a bit insulting that my Thanatos is only slightly larger than my Hyperion... and that the Nyx is the same size as the Moros. Lets not forget some planets need to be larger as well.
Asteriods too some of them should be big as a battleship on average then again high sec seems to munch though them too often to see those sizes normally.

Sadly I know more than enough about the CCP art team that 3d modeling skills alone still wont get hired as an artist.
I have to be a well rounded artist to wrok at ccp at any rate which I am not I am still an amature, stuck at concept level.

Agreed. Carriers need to be atleast twice as large, maybe even three times as large and supercarriers should be a lot, lot larger.
