I don't know about YOUR tastes, but for me, Master of Orion 2, SM Alpha Centauri and to a lesser degree Heroes of Might and Magic 3 or other such games have a place of my HDD even today, alongside that little gem called Star Wars Pod Racer. While playing the old classics is fine and dandy, and EVE does take up a good amount of my free time, it takes a good day to get people around for a game sesion of MoO2 or H3, and single-player gets boring really fast. I played through KOTOR and KOTORII twice, and while it's nice, I wouldn't play through a 3rd time. I could whip up Planescape Torment, but for how much I love it, I never actually get around to FINISH it, just pick it up again and again from the start and try different ways of doing things. I hate shooters, I haven't actually played through neither of the ones that ever came out, and yes, that includes even the first Half Life game... so don't even THINK about suggesting Bioshock or something similar. I tried "Beyond Good and Evil" again, and while the story was nice and all, it was too much "twitch-gamey" for me after a while so I dropped it again. Yesterday, I re-picked-up Homeworld 2, and while the ability to play at 1600x1200 with full graphics settings and get a smooth flowing game going is nice, the "singleplayer" went way too fast, I never even needed to save/load a single time, got to the "save captain Soban" mission in little under 6 hours or so, and called it a night.
So... really... is there ANY game that came out in the past, oh, say 3 to 5 years that would be good to play ? So, please no shooters (not FPSs, not space combat, no twitch gaming at all), preferably no RTSs either unless it's "Homeworldish", turn-based ones meh, maybe, but only those similar to the ones I mentioned above. _

I'm a sucker for Team Fortress 2.
Edit: I also HIGHLY recommend the Half-Life series, Episode Two while very much a repeat is just so damn well done. The only bad thing I can say about it is that it's a tad short. |

My current playlist consists of EVE, Battlefield 2, UT3 Demo, Tabula Rasa open beta, Halo 3, Guitar Hero 3 demo, and World in Conflict.
Games that'll be joining that playlist soon are CoD4, CRYSIS, UT3 and its editor (mainly the editor), and GH3.
Games you should play... probably none of the above. On a more constructive note start off with what systems you have other than PC. -------------------------

Real men play skill games. I personally recommend arcade scrolling shooters in particular Mushihimesama, DoDonPachi DOJ, and Gradius V, and also beat-em-ups (as long as you have friends to play with, single player sucks) in particular Street Fighter 3 Third Strike and Guilty Gear X2 Accent Core. Then again if you dont like twitch gameplay you probably wouldn't like 90% of my games collection so I'm maybe not the right person to give you advice.

Neverwinter Nights 2 with the Mask of the Betrayer Expansion I can recommend.
In the Expansion you cursed to be a kind of soul-sucking vampire and have to eat souls just to stay alive. It is overall a nice feature, despite what other might say about the "spirit-meter" in game. If you do not control yourself and start to eat souls left and right, your hunger for them increase dramatically, which forces you to eat even more to stay alive.
If you liked Planescape Torment, you will love MotB. Great storytelling there.

I'm still hooked on 'medieval total war'
play it in battlefield mode with harder settings and you will find it a challenge as the AI is very clever on it
also, having to marry off your daughters teaches you alot about politics

Portal. If you haven't played it you haven't lived yet. TF2 and ep2 are nice extras i guess.
MDK. The original one. Just play it.... Please. It's on Abandonia and Home of the Underdogs! For gods sake, play it...
edit: Ah, no shooty shooty at all? In that case, Civilization IV, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, Psychonauts and Trackmania United all come to mind.
Also, still Portal. Just, Portal.

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and expansions, Gothic 2, Football Manager 2008, TOCA 2, Worms 2, Ground Control 2, Europa Universalis 2 (highly recommended), Far Cry (yeah, a FPS, but, what a game!!!!), baldur's gate 2 (if you have not already completed it), Civ 4

Highly recommended. The scoring system on the real thing is finnickity so seeing how it works is ftw.
And to the OP, I don't know what to recommend because you've pretty much gone through my "Best games evar" list there minus the FPS games.
Second best games evar...
The Longest Journey & sequel? Fahrenheit? The "Dune 2" update?
Ground Control the first (free now)? Ground Control is pretty chuffing awesome and quite tactical. If you liked HW2 I think you could very well get into it because it had a fair few elements in common.
SWAT3 is a first person shooter but it's significantly less twitchy than other games of it's ilk. Also Hidden & Dangerous 2. Both are really 70%+ about tactics. By the time you get around to pulling the trigger you shouldn't have to do any fancy shooting because the enemy should already be in your sights with no clue you are there. It's really all about the silent brainstem shots with the De Lisle Commando Carbine.
Full Spectrum Warrior and it's slightly more in depth sequel are Real Time Tactics games. Personally I love them because they teach you the techniques and then vigorously **** you every time you fail to employ them correctly. The first game is a lot more abstract whereas the second game brings in stuff like splitting your squad.
Silent Storm and expansion is <3 if you like turn based tactics games (like the fightey bits in XCom). It's very cool. The weapons sim is reasonably detailed the environments can all be totally taken to bits so you can for example hear footsteps above you and dump a Bren gun magazine through the ceiling making a hole in the ceiling. You can then throw an antitank grenade through the resulting hole and take out half the room walls, ceilings, floors and all.
On a similar note I thought Brigade E5 had potential but the presentation was horrible. I think there's a sequel called 7.62 coming out which might be better.
Hmmm. Europa Universalis 3?
My friend is a fiend for strategy games and he raves about this one. It is a worryingly hardcore strategy and politics sim covering 330 years of history. Personally it's way over my head but if you want something deep to get into the amount of detail this appears to devote to ... well, just about everything is quite ridiculous.
He also swears by the Total War series (the Medieval and Roman instalments particularly) and Age Of Empires.

Edited by: Akita T on 25/10/2007 13:42:59 Arghh!!! NO SHOOTERS That's what I specifically said but almost nobody listened ___
@Sin Meng Hmm, I keep hearing of "Tabula Rasa", didn't try it, might be worth a shot, but I was asking for "singleplayer" games actually, as EVE takes up most of my "online" time As for systems ? Have a PS2 in the house sometimes (my brother's), played quite a bit of the games he has (last count was over 300), found a few nice ones, even managed to enjoy some of the more "twitch-based" ones like the God of Wars and liked Shadow of the Colossus (not play it, just watch my brother play), had a bit of mindless fun with Persona 3 lately, watched him play a bit of Rogue Galaxy too... but meh... not really interested. For me, it's PC only.
@Deviana Sevidon NWN never "did" it for me in any of the incarnations. Too much flashy combat, meh-ok-ish story. Not for me. Haven't tried NWN2:MotB yet tho', dropped NWN2 "the original" pretty damn fast and never bothered with the expansions. Will probably give it a shot tho', if you say it's nice.
@mogwai Medieval Total War you say ? Hmm... yeah, one of my coworkers played it a lot a few months back, no idea why I didn't get into it too (dunno, seemed a bit weird at frist glimpse, as much as I saw of it)... let's see if he can loan it to me for a while, hehe.
@Reiisha Hmm, Portal. Ah, yes, that would do it. For a while, anyway. MDK: played it through when it came out. A lot. Don't feel like doing it again nowadays tho' Dreamfall ? The first TLJ was nicer IMHO, Dreamfall is so... "whoops, where did the end of the story go" ? Besides, no point playing it a second time.
@Marylin Monroe Morrowind and Gothic were even worse for me as NWN, I have no idea why. I think I like 2D/isometric stuff too much
EDIT : UUUUH ! YES ! Thank you, that LAST comment I just made to you just made gave me AN IDEA ! X-Com, the original, on "superhuman", here I come ! Taste my primed explosives, evil Sectoid bastard ! MWAHAHHAHAHAH _

Galactic Civilizations 2 (+ expansion Dark Avatar) - epic turn-based 4X strategy in the tradition of MoO 2, and better than MoO 3 oodles of gameplay, and another expansion is coming out in a month or two. I suggest you check out a couple reviews, but if you've played Alpha Centauri and MoO 2, then you would be doing yourself a severe disservice but not giving GalCiv 2 a try.

Tried GalCiv2 too. Hated the "cartoonish" feel and the over-simplified combat. Heck, I loved "Birth of the Federation" a lot more than GC2. A *lot* more. And I still prefer Master of Orion 2 _

Definitely this then. I didn't like that unofficial XCom sequel but I loved this. Don't worry about getting a history lesson. You end up fighting **** mecha.
EU3 apparently goes from sandbox-ey to history lesson depending on user preference. I think there's certain starting points based on real historical situations or you can just start off in 17 whatever and develop the situation as you see fit.
