I was just wondering if there are any vets out there who would know the best use of using a freigher in mining operations, like should we keep it at the station and just stockpile the ore there and then fly it or can the ship actually go out to the asteroid field also and haul the containers in?

I'm mining with a frigate (tormentor) and an industrial cargo ship atm (bestower, 10K cargo)
I just keep mining with the frigate until I fill a can to 10k, bookmark it, dock, take out the bestower, then warp to 0 to the can and bring the ore back.

same, the one I am talking about is the Capital Inudstrial Freighter, the Providence, the big one, I was just wondering the best use for that monster of a ship as my training for it is almost complete!

Freighters, like the Providence, can't scoop cans so use it to move major stocks of ore from one system to another.
Remember that, even in hi-sec, Freighters can be popped if you carry something worth popping it for!

Freighters have no use in mining ops. They can do nothing to help. At all. Period.
They're for flying between starbases, and other more esoteric options. Mining is not one of them.
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

Another thing that they are good for is popping in null sec too.

Yep. Although I am guessing the OP is missing the nuances of EVE terminology.
Freighters = MASSIVE cargo holds. Can ONLY pick up cargo in stations and from other Freighter wrecks (otherwise they cannot scoop loot in space at all).
Transports = T2 Haulers. Two varieties. Deep Space Transport has good cargo and good resistance to damage (still a hauler though and pop all too easy. And Blockade Runners. They have crap cargo capacity but are very fast (fitted right almost approach a shuttle in getting about and have a higher warp speed than almost anything else).
Industrials = T1 Haulers. The normal ones you are used to (Badgers, Iterons, Bestower, Mammoth, etc.). Paper thin and slow with okish cargo (actually sub-freighter the MkV has potentially the largest cargo capacity of any hauler).
Usually freighters are called freighters and the rest are called haulers or indies (for industrials).

sorry to swoop in with a even more basic question.
but now that we had a confusing terminology breakdown.
errm. ...so.
which ship do you use for jet can mining?
i'm gearing up to hit T1 industrials...cause my cargo-fat frigate(navitas) is sort of annoying..in the respect that i can only harvest so much, and transport so much finished mineral/metal
i'd read... that the basic idea was to mine ore from a roid till your ships cargo hold was full... then plop it into a jet can... which holds more than a ship hold. and then when done with the can. pick that up and fly it to a base.
which ships do that? do you need two ships? one to mine, one seperate to scoop up a can? or can a industrial T1 mine and take back a full jet can full of ore?
what determines being able to ferry the jet can home?
thanks to any responders

Yes, you need two ships. One for mining, the other for hauling.
Find a safe, out of the way, place to mine. Keep dragging the ore to the jet-can as your cargo bay fills up.
A jet can can hold up to 25k m3. You can train into a hauler that is able to haul 10k m3 pretty quickly.
When you create your jet-can(s), right-click them and create a bookmark. This will allow you to warp your hauler directly do them. When you are ready to haul, just go switch ships and start warping to bookmarks.
Watch out for high-sec pirates. People will come by and "flip" your cans in an attempt to get the right to attack you. Flipping a can is when they take your ore, then put it into a new can of their own. If you take the ore back then they will be able to attack you without Concord intervening. If someone takes your ore, you are best of letting them have it and moving along to a new location.

I just have two accounts lol one for purely mining and science aspect and one for combat and hauling. I just window both and make the resolution 1024X720or whatever it is and just work on both. Just recently joined a corp which i think is your best bet leave your lonerness and join one i will admit finding the right one for you will take a while im going on my 7 or 8th now lol this newest one being probably my ninth and we will see how it turns out. But if your not able to have a second account many of the suggestions here are great.

Even better, two players (or 1 player running 2 accounts at the same time)
One sits in a hauler, gradually filling his hold, while any friendly miners drop ore into the can. The same can can be used for an hour if it is not completely emptied.
Note: I am NOT, repeat, NOT telling anyone to go mining with some random person in local. Go mining with members of a corp you joined, or with people you know outside of the game. _______________________________
