I have PvP'd For a while and portney has to be one of few who dont smack talk in local, as a general rule i wont talk in local cause everyone starts complaining almost right away. it would be great if everyone would be as polite to each other in local i think it would improve game play.
Plz No flaming.
Hats off to all players in eve that are even half as polite as portney, they are truely the ones that make the game enjoyable!

Edited by: Kulach on 26/02/2004 02:15:07 I totally agree. Smack talk is just immature and childish (even though I can understand that something might slip out every now and then in the heat of the battle).
I too think it would improve the game play if smack talk could be avoided...
Good post.

But that was sorta roleplayish in a half-literate way. So not really smack. Subtle difference, but there is one.

No, it's called RP. Ever located someone with an agent? They call the target subject scumsucker.

So you blow up people's ships, and expect them to just become your friends? Of course they are gonna be p*ssed at you and trash you in local.
Expect hatred from your victims.

It's the people who spam local with insults and childish "We ownz ju!" type crap that I can't stand. You know, the ones who think that the game is real and for some reason they really HATE you because you happen to be on the other side of the firing line? It's just a GAME, folks!
I always try to have a bit of fun in local with my CA counterparts. I'll even open or accept a convo from them from time to time. It's usually pretty cool to get to know your "enemy" a bit better and makes the whole game that much more enjoyable. _____ CLS Civil Affairs Bureau

There are some good "winners" out there. Had several conversations with p0ma and he's pretty cool, even tho he podded me twice :)

Why?
If I ever lose my ship in a 1vs1 fight on TQ, sure, I'll be mad at myself, but I'd admire and respect the guy that pulled something off to beat me.

When some guy at the edge of CA space killed me, (has happened 4 times, different pirates), I've never complained. I've never smacktalked. I just say thanks for podding me, so I don't have to warp all the way back.
I only smacktalk when they fail to kill me

Well, for every 2 or 3 people like us that like RP'ing or can appreciate that it's only a game, there are 50 other people that don't play things that way.
It's not gonna change anytime soon, it's the nature of online games. They attract people of vastly different intellect so you'll always get people saying "I ownzed you arsse loser..." or "fxck off twt" or something similar in local. -------------------------- PIE Inc Captain and Internal Communications Officer |

Why? I only expect hatred from nimrods. They don't even have to be victims.
Some of the biggest lootings I have managed recently have been the most polite people I've met.
Some guy in a shuttle turned up at my gate, his body was floating in space less than 8 seconds after he came out of warp. He convoed me and actually congratulated me on the speed of the kill.
I podded a guy in an indy, spilling a ton of NPC loot, and a few thousand nocx, he wished me good luck, and told me not to spend it all at one station.
On the other hand, I podded a scout in an empty shuttle, and got a torrent of abuse, until I *****ed his pod, and sent him west. You'd think someone who specifically created a scouting alt would expect that sort of thing, really...
Also, people with instajump bookmarks who warp right under your nose, and say 'ahahaha, better luck next time, lamer', like it was original, or even amusing. While this is more 'tardo' than 'smacktalk', I'm still amused.
Smacktalk is actually quite effective in battles, as Homo says. But equally off-balancing is when you expect someone to be an arse, and they turn out to be calm and pleasant, or *gasp* funny. .

Smaktalk sux.
One thing I always try to control in my corpmates is any chat in local. Everything should be friendly, even if we just got a toasting when we should have won.
Otherwise you just ended up looking like a fool.

I totally agree, I love fighting people that are still courteous and respectful in local, regardless of the outcome of the fight. I've lost some fights and won some where the enemy was still respectful in local, makes the game so much more fun. Some of the kiddie smack talk or posting of damage shots in local seems to be designed to convey the most disrespect in the shortest sentence possible. Quite annoying.
I certainly understand being upset at the loss of a ship, or excited after a kill but ya gotta keep in mind that there is a real human on the other end of the keyboard and respect should be paid. ------------------------------------------------

So which is it?
Insult someone, call them scum and call it roleplay?
Or
It's just a game?
Can't be both you know, can't just, call someone a this and a that and then say "it was RP". Then go into another system and blame someone for smacktalk when they say "it was RP".
It's a doubleedged sword. When someone blows up a ship you've bleeded for, used every isk, every waking hour to get...and then someone comes along and blows it up, you tend to get angry. And rightly so. So if they call you a bastard on local, try to respect their loss too.

What do you loose in CS or Freelancer ? Nothing. And players still smack talk because they were killed / destroyed.
Now take EVE, a game where things cost a lot of effort. Don't you think that being ****ed is a natural and predictable thing ? _______________________________________________

No, they are very different. When you rp your hatred you wont find (whats the word) "leet" speak (somthing like that). They tend to keep it in character and in general its more intended in fun than any real animosity. Basically the RP side would be kept within the context of the game and its background history along with what background history, political and social views the character the player has created for themselves.
Smack talk on the other hand is usally some borox along the lines of how they are going to "own" you and usualy degrades into yo momman smack talk and loser talk and blah blah blah blah.
If you cant tell the difference your not looking close enough.

Wasn't talking about leet CS-kids, i know the difference between english and leetlish.
Missed my point there.
You can't say your saying things in roleplay way and then say it's just a game. Roleplay isn't an excuse for insults.
In different conversations it's ok, but you can't have this:
guy1: Hah! You minmatar scum are no match for the mighty power of Amarr!
guy2: You bastard, just wait until my friends hear about this. Consider yourself a dead man.
guy1: lol..chill...it's only a game.
We can't have what guy1 is doing.

Yup i agree, hats off to good play, and courteous GAMEPLAY. I was podded by TANK CEO and his m0o crew the other week, and there was no smack talking by those guys, Tank even had the courtesy to reply to my evemail asking why he asked me if i had implants (to which i had responded no and was subsequently relieved of my pod posthaste) as I am new and didnt know that he would have ransome'd my pod if i indeed was wearing them. Not too sure that i would have paid to NOT be podded, but the point is, bad guys that they are, they at least adhere to some form of coutesy.
