(Obligatory apologies if this has been discussed before; just too many carrier threads for me to go through all of it )
The short of it:
- Decrease Carrier's Drone bay size to 4,000m3
- Ship Maint. Bay remains at 500,000m3
- Fighter volume (unpacked) goes from 5,000m3 to 25,000m3
- Fighters are now kept in Ship Maint. Bay
Since the devs are keen for carriers to have a greater degree of specialisation per role - and the 'hauling module' that was mentioned sounds a little inelegant - moving the fighters to the ship bay will prevent a hauling carrier from keeping fighters with it. It can still launch normal drones (and has ample spares in the 4,000m3) along with a few fighters depending on how many ships are onboard.
The use of the ship maint. bay to store the fighters will also 'nerf' the ability to be a resupply ship (with spare ships) and a solopwnmobile simultaneously.
Some other points:
1) Although stored in the ship bay, the fighters would still launch normally from the drone window.
2) Having the fighters in the ship bay seems fairly reasonable, given that they resemble ships more than conventional drones.
3) Right now, for example, a Thanatos will usually fit 19 fighters and an assortment of normal. This fit would be still be possible, but it would now be taking up 95% of the space in the ship maint. bay.
4) If you catch a carrier hauling with 2 transports/haulers onboard, a small gang would have an excellent chance of killing it, given the huge reduction in dps when performing that kind of role.

As a new carrier pilot this seems like a much better idea than what the devs are coming out with to fix the ôoverpowered, overly versatile carriersö
Although I have no idea how hard this would be to implement this would effectively cut the carriers ability to do both jobs at once, without making drastic changes to fighters or implementing new modules to adjust the carrier for specific roles.

Quite an elegant solution actually. If CCP fully intends to nerf carriers, this is the kind of mentality they should adopt. As a pilot training for carriers, I wouldn't mind this change at all.

Since no one stated it. What will you do when you DSC and have your fighters out? Slowboat across the universe to pick them up in a carrier since no haulers will have enough space to grab them?
Failed, sorry.
Oh, and CCP, it would be awesome if when i DSC thanks to all the lag on TQ in fleet battles that my fighters and drones 'vanish' from space and appear in my carrier. Ever tried to grab 20 fighters from space in a ship that goes less than 80 m/s? It's [insert curses]. ______________________ Just another cool alt. |
