Main questions is,
is it worth trying to mine gas clouds? or is regular ore mining better pay?
and for a newbie sorta how does it compare with ice mining?
Ive seen a few gas clouds and I currently use a retriever for basic mining, but would be easy to fit a gas cloud harvester to try it out, just haven't yet.

Of what I heard you will need a POS for refining and production of boosters, due to it is illegal to produce drugs in empire space (Eg. need a 0.0 system).
So most, of people I have talked to, says its not worth the trouble, through CCP says they are going to change that.

Ore mining would be best, Gas harvesting is worth it only if you have POS and equipement to make boosters and ice mining usually tend to yield only 25-30% of the potential isk/hour you could be making with ore.

As it stands now, the 8 static gas clouds are way out in 0.0 and jealously guarded by the pilots who live out there already. In the next patch, there will be another 8 static clouds in low-sec to make the less potent Synth-boosters which will be legal in high-sec, but you can imagine the pirate camps around those....
If you could manage to find clouds through exploration, you might be able to sell to someone who did have the POS resources, but that requires having someone who is big into probing out sites.
My recommendation: Stick to the ores you know. If a corpie manages to find a gas cloud site, it might be worth refitting for a quick run. Don't base your income on gas, but if you can snag some, it might be a nice boost in cash.

Just wasn't sure with the different types of mining, I appreciate it. Will definately stick with the ores I know for now at least.

Also, unless something has changed that I haven't noticed, the skill to do gas mining is very rare, and thus expensive. So it's probably not something a new player will want to spend his money on unless he happens to be part of an alliance with easy access to a gas cloud.
I used to get It.
Then It changed.
Now I don't even know what It is.
