What is this silly American holiday about? What is the point of carving faces on a pumpkin? It seems rather ridiculous and childish.

It's the one time of the year when even ugly lassies can look stunning in skimpy french maid / pirate outfits.
I thought eveyone knew that was the point.

What's wrong with that? More importantly, when else is it socially acceptable to go around dressed like Solid Snake?

Yes it is ridiculous and childish, but is there anything wrong with being ridiculous and childish once in a while? Personally I think it's the greater crime if you lose your inner-child as opposed to just indulging it sometimes.

Halloween, or All-Hallows-Eve, as it is the eve of All-Hallows-Day, originated as a pagan ritual from the Samhain Festival, celebrated among the Celts of Ireland and Great Britian.
According to tradition, this was one of the few linear times of the year when spirits could communicate with the material world.
In walks the church in the nineth century and they move All Saints Day from May 13 to November 1st (originally Oct 31 to consume the pagan beliefs but the days have split since then).
The only thing AMERICAN about this 'Holiday' is that we commercialized it and sell cute little costumes to the children and the ladies can dress like total ****s and get away with it for a night.

If anything, we're castrating this holiday in the US like all the others. We gotta be oh so careful about everyones feelings and respecting every belief and we don't wanna leave kids out blah blah.
There was a time, a long time ago, when I was in gradeschool and every year at halloween the kids could put on their costumes and we'd march from classroom to classroom showing off our costumes. Then each class would make halloween decorations for arts and crafts time. Afterwards the teacher would read a 'scary' halloween story and we'd discuss it and stuff. Not anymore. Most schools don't even celebrate it and the ones that do usually ban costumes.
Just like X-mas back when you could actually call it christmas. Then again retailers destroyed the meaning of christmas long ago.
That Easter bunny had better hope his feet are lucky cause I'm thinking he's next.
I can understand wanting to respect the beliefs of another but the way we're doing is completely backwards. We shouldn't be neutralizing these holidays but sharing them. We have halloween well maybe we can explain the culture to kids who don't normally celebrate it. They have Ramada or whatever, maybe that can be explained to kids who haven't got a clue. Schools should be about opening the mind.
