I'm very new to the game, so if what I say is complete bull, donŠt hesitate to mention it.
I want to get a tank. I want to win battles by lasting longer then the opponent, wich means the following:
-Being able to do sustained damage over a looong time -being able to withstand a lot of damage -being able to get away when things go haywire
I think I want to use turrets, gunnery seems to have a nice feel for me.
I like lasers.
Wich battleship should I go for?

Armageddon Stick with Dual Pulse and Mega Pulse Lasers. Cap Booster 800s are your friend.

Edit: I'm just posting this to be an idiot, I didn't actually read the post.

Oh I feel bad it was a new guy, so I'll actually make a real post. If you're talking lasers, you're talking Amarr. Be fore-warned Amarr are a bit underpowered at the moment.
But that said, Amarr really only have 2 battleships. The Geddon, and the Abaddon. The Abaddon runs out capacity very quickly, but has a great tank and does good damage. The Geddon is cheaper but also does good damage, but has a lesser tank, and you may have a harder time fitting it. Both are very good (by amarr standards), for pvp I'd say use the Geddon (easier to replace), for pve use the the Abaddon (monster mission runner).
That being said, if you're new you shouldn't be looking for a BS till about the 2-3 month mark for pve, and about 6-7 months for pvp.
As a side, you may find lasers very underwhelming, but there's a big increase in their performance when you get to the Large variety.

What you are looking for is an iWin ship im afraid. There are pleanty of BSes which fit your first 2 criteria, passive armor tanked abbadons and Megathrons spring to mind, they are fantastic with decent dps and long lasting.
However being able to get away when things go haywire is a luxuary which can only realy be afforded by so caled "nano" ships or ships which can be extreamly fast to avoid enemy fire and get away when things go bad. However nano ships or ships with the ability to gtfo when things go bad dont ussually have the luxuary of a heftey tank.
Given that you like lasers and you want to go for a BS id go for the abbadon. However:
Eve is not supposedly a game with any sort of end game ship. BSes are not the end all be all of eve and are not what everyone wants to fly. Sorry if in lecturing you on stuff you already know however.
It may be that you want to specialise in the larger ships of eve which may wel be a good idea for you but dont dash straight for BSes with no thought for skills or ability.
If you are going for pve then the bigger the better and the soonner you can competantly fly BSes the better but for pvp do not make the mistake of dashing straight for a BS.
/annoying lecture

Edited by: Atius Tirawa on 30/10/2007 00:40:19 I would train Amarr gunships if I were you. Getting away may be an issue, but they are the premiere gunships in eve - even if they have seen better days, there is absolutly no doubt that they are going to get a nice buff soon(tm) while the rest of eve is getting nurfed.
Train Amarr, they take a lot of criticism from newer players, but a well played, well skilled Amarr gunboat (Geddon) is a frightening thing even today. By the time your skills are ready, you may be feeling the rush of a buff.
The mistake is to go Minmatar. . .we have a nurf incoming just because of the sheer number of whines and the popularity of our ships.
This or train a Domi. Still the best solo BB out there. -----------

Edited by: Deschenus Maximus on 30/10/2007 01:01:18 Abaddon is the ship you seek...
BUT!
Don't jump into it untill you have -All cap skills at 4-5 -All armour tanking skills at 4-5 -T2 Guns and all Gunnery skills at 4-5 -The ability to use ECM drones (that's your best chance to get out of dodge when things go bad with this fat ship).

Really not fair to those of us who bode our time with Minmatar when they were the 'laughingstock' of EVE. (yes, even worse than Amarr)
So it better not happen.

Considering I'm transfer from Amarr to Minmatar, it DEFINETLY better not happen.

Doesn't matter what you train really. CCP will eventually come to the conclusion that it f***ed up somewhere along the line and nerf away months of your training anyway. Just flip a coin or something. Other than that, you could commit yourself to 10 years of training everything.

You were Amarr when it was good, and you think Minmatar are going to stay happy? There is one constant race in eve that has the gank right. Let me give you a hint: they fly green ships, their ships seem to be getting 7.5% rep per level on their newer ships, 2 OP ships of theirs have been nurfed, but they remain strong. . .it starts with a G.
We Minmatar are one trick ponies, eventually a speed reducing mod or a speed nurf will happen. . .then we are back in 2004. -----------
