Ok here's a question for all the non-pirates corps out there. What would you say if a couple of your members said " We want to do some pirating but we would like to stay in the corp.". They have been good corp members and they like all the people in the corp. They just want to try something new. How would you handle it?

I think they want PvP. I can understand them, it must be boring as hell to Mine all night and day. Try and Declare a war against a noob corp near your system and try out.

Edited by: Dark Messiah on 27/02/2004 14:40:50 Ok not being in a corp myself at this time I would say it would depend on a few things....
1: any possible retaliation attacks to other corp members depend on who they kill or what corp they are in, possibly starting wars.
2: size of the corp and their reputation.
3: it all comes down to how a CEO feels about it at the end of the day.

Edited by: cypriss on 27/02/2004 14:45:27 give them the big fat BOOT. pirates are despicable and would only sully the corps name.
but honestly, wht do you think? with the politics in this game the corp would be committing political suicide if they allowed it to happen, but im talking about bigger corps here or corps involved in an alliance. otherwise if your corp has pirates in it you might as well just be a pirate corp, cause thats how people are going to see it

An absolute NO.
Though I'll surely try the pirate life myself one day. But of course not in my current corp.
A more difficult question is whether to accept them back in the corp again...

Right - check if they want to rip hulls of players, or if they really want to make a living of piracy.
Fighting players "only"? - Declare war and see that the non PvP pilots keep their heads up; maybe they will join the n00b bashing in the neighbourhood.
"Real" piracy? - Check several questions like: Does it go along with your corporations identity? What about the reputation of your corp? Does your corp belong to an alliance that you care of but might need to leave? Does the majority of the "valued" members wants this? Does the CEO and shareholders want it?
I bet some do it pretty easily, like: "Hand one of them 1.5m isk and let them run a pirates or PvP sub-corp to try it out." ____________________________________________________

Maud,
Everyone in Eve is a pirate to some extent or another. Shooting someone and nicking their loot is piracy, camping a system as part of an alliance is piracy. Its all a matter of perception really. Ive pirated heavily in my past, and I still do so occasionally now. Who really cares? The only people that cry "pirate!" are the people that get ganked.
Its all fun.
The only drawback with pirating in a corp is the possibility of pirating an ally/sympathiser unknowingly, or possibily drawing the rest of the corp into a war they didn't want.
But, like I said, we are all pirates. You kill and ship and take its loot, under whatever circumstances be it war or not, its piracy.

If it was a total vanilla corp with no corp wars and no enemies it would be potential sucicide for the corp identity. Not every piracy victim is the guy who says "me and my 20 BS-driving mates will be back to bash you". By the law of averages one day the part-time "pirates" will blow away fighter moonlighting as a hauler in a decent combat corp and they will bring a war-dec back on their own corp.
In those situations being the part-time pirates in a corp will bring serious potential consequences to corpmates.
There again, if it was a less vanilla corp with some combat experience, some ongoing corp wars and some declared allegiences and emnities. It could be fine, just a matter of making sure the "piracy" happens a long way from your allies and is best place to discomfort your enemies.
Case in point, Jericho Fraction ... we have about 5 corp wars and are pretty unimpressd by the Phoenix Alliance. I'd be inclined to say ... go give it go ... but call it "commerce raiding" avoid harming any of our allies or members of alliances that are friendly to us, and see if you can score kills against the appropriate targets in X,Y,Z locations.
Sure its not freefire unrestricted shoot-anyone "piracy" ... but its boxing clever, and making sure that diplomatic disasters don't occur.
As with everything corp related in Eve ... its a balance of finding a mid-ground between whats good for the corp and whats good for the individual.

I wouldn't do pvp/piracy in a corp that is not looking for PvP.
When I started, in Xentech, I knew I always wanted to be a pirate, but I would not start on that path while flying Xentech's corp tags.
I set up an alt, (hi, baby) and stole some poor guys ore, we had a discussion of sorts, and after that, I was dragged into the world of the evil pirate.
But I left Xentech without dirtying their name with my misdeeds.
I would say most non-combat corps would be upset if one of their members turned pirate while still working for/with them. reputation means a lot in this game. .

Edited by: Koda on 27/02/2004 15:08:57 I have to agree with Miso. "Piracy" is often just a matter of perspective.
I've been in many pirate hunting gangs where we camped gates or stations and even considered using the now illegal TS log-on insta-gank (but never actually did) all in the name of "good."
A criminal justice professor described this as the "Dirty Harry" problem ---> Using immoral means to accomplish good ends. --------------

Piracy is a slippery slope.
At the top you have normal, conscientious players.
However once they try their first nastiness, be it ore theft, loot whoring or whatever, they begin the slippery slope. Soon they are killing any indys in 0.0 space who approach them. After that they begin camping for indys, later still (further down the slope) they will simply camp and pod all who pass. After this point, at the bottom of the slope, you get m0o and SI who Eat Babies and Burn Nuns in Real Life.
be careful out there. That other guy waiting in the queue for the gate MIGHT be a baby-munching frock-burner, YOU JUST DON'T KNOW!

Edited by: Miso on 27/02/2004 15:25:08 It is a tricky one alright...
DM and Jade are right that reputation is everything in Eve, for player and corp.
The only way to really discredit a corp in Eve is to label them, or accuse them of being "pirate". That's it. The irony for me is, that all corps are pirates, so its all a load of rubbish.
Corp A is a pirate corp. It actively pirates
Corp B is a mining corp. It does not actively PvP
Corp B see's corp A as bad and see's itself as good.
Corp A sees Corp B as good and see's itself as bad and plays to it
Miso see's both as two corps that she would gank if given half the chance, and steal all their loot.
What does that make me?
Perception and reputation are everything in Eve. How you see yourselves and how others see you is the key to this game. More is lost and won on perception than on the battle field.
Curse is decried as a pirate alliance. Yet it does nothing worse than any other alliance in Eve. Alliances are all the same, hypocrits. But then thats just my perception :) -------------------------------------------- Dead

I've never held with this "being a pirate" is the worst of the worst in the reputation stakes game to be honest. There are much worse things you can be in the world of Eve.
Lets face it, simply announcing your are a pirate and blowing up ships for profit in 0.0 is far less antisocial than, for example ...
1. infiltrating corps with alts and cleaning them out. 2. scamming people with fakey escrows 3. selling omens as apocs because they look a bit similar. 4. opening trade windows and whipping your items out at the last moment. 5. targetting people with noob ships in hi sec space and hoping they will fire and get concordo-ganked. 6. using wardec dodginess to create kills (skipping corp and presenting targets) 7. sitting 20m from sentry guns to fight battles 8. trade channel spammers 9. people that send hundreds of cold-calling recruitment evemails 10. people that create near identical alts and try to pass themselves off as other people ... grrrr!
Oh yes, and breaking your word of course and breaking faith and trust.
All these things are worse for the reputation than piracy.
Jericho has ex-pirates amongst our members and they are perfectly honourable and trustworthy people. Its not like a incureable disease or something.
But re the piracy proposition, where it can go wrong is if some of your corp members blow up a corp ally. That *will* impact reputation and damage your corp standing because it is a betrayal of trust.
And that kind of taint doesn't go away.
Love and peace

Members of a trade corp want to go pirate, privateer, or commit industrial sabotage, yet remain associated?
Could form a dummy company headed by someone you trust, and stress not leaving a trail back to the parent company. Several pirate corps do the opposite to handle their trade, high sec bulk mining, etc. in empire space, by forming 'legit' shell companies.
Maybe not the most honorable solution for the parent, but if it plays its cards right, it won't tarnish its reputation. With the way corps and associations and -people- evolve in this game, I wouldn't expect the spin-off corp to remain beholden to the parent for very long, though I would hope it would remain on good terms.

Problem is, if you have promoted a reputation in game with your main its not a viable option ... as long as your name is known you will be associated (as will your corp) with the deeds done. Of course you could go with an alt-ganking corp, but that is a kind of cowardly option.
