So, torpedoes are being converted into short ranged weapons. I donĘt think they were originally intended to be short ranged at all. Remember that HAMs are a very recent addition to the game. The whole division of missiles into short ranged and long ranged is fairly recent as best I can remember. Torpedoes were intended to be the slow heavy hitters and cruise missiles were intended to be a fast but relatively light missile.
Well, OKą Eve evolves. All the guns have a short and a long ranged version so I suppose that itĘs reasonable to expect that missiles would have this same division to make things more equal.
But there are several problems with this that need to be addressed.
Short ranged guns universally use less powergrid and cpu than the equivalent long ranged gun. This is necessary because short ranged ships must fit a MWD and a heavy tank if they are going to survive long enough to get into range.
However, torpedo launchers use far more grid and cpu than cruise launchers do. (The fitting requirements donĘt look bad at all to those that are used to the requirements for guns. But the cpu requirement for all launchers is fairly high and the battleship that relies on launchers the most (the Raven) is balanced with the lower grid requirements in mind.
So, if torpedoes are going to be converted into a short ranged weapon they need to have their fitting requirements seriously reduced.
In addition, guns generally come in three sizes. For large rails thereĘs the dual 250, the 350, and the 425. Larger versions have more range and do more damage but they also have higher fitting requirements. This gives people a lot of flexibility when fitting out a gunship. Missile users donĘt have this option.
There needs to be a heavy torpedo launcher with extra range and damage, a regular launcher with the normal fitting requirements (lower than for cruise missiles of course), and a light launcher that does less damage and has less range but that has very low fitting requirements. And, of course, the same thing needs to be done with all the other launchers.
Missiles were originally intended to be fundamentally different from guns. But somewhere along the line it appears that thereĘs been a movement to make missiles just another form of gun. If thatĘs the direction Eve is going then I can deal with it. But giving them the disadvantages of guns with none of the advantages just seems wrong.
If the way guns work is going to be used as justification for changing the way missiles work then missiles need to have their fitting requirement adjusted and more types need to be introduced too.
