I've brought this issue on some eve related forum, but it'd be interesting to hear the opinions of ppl actively playing the game (and this forum is more ppular too).
I start with what I see as "fun" and "grind" in Eve. For me Eve is PvP, I play to fight other players and even with todays state of PvP it is still the best part of the game (at least for me). I think everyone would agree that PvP doesn't generate ISK (if we're not talking about piracy, and even then it's questionable source of income), here "grind" comes out of the shadows. I see 2 ways for me to make ISK (I'm talking about single account with PvP specialized character)
1) 0.0 ratting - 20-30 mill/h, I'm not talking about faction spawns because tbh, I've seen them only twice for my whole Eve life, and I spent a lt of time ratting (may be I'm just THAT lucky).
2) lvl 4 missions - 10-25 mill/h if you collect all the loot and salvage everything.
Now, let's look at todays trends in PvP - recon ships, nano-HACs, command ships. All of the above will require days (if not week or more) of grinding, unless of course I sign up for a second 8 h/day job, called ratting or mission running.
When I mean I want to have fun in PvP, for me it's not just joining the nearest gang with the whatever ship I can fly. For me, it's being an equal in that gang, being able to fly what is most useful in this situation. To be able to bring T2 fitted bs when required, or speed-HAC or command ship. Of course, it is possible to fit whatever crap you can find and join, but I personally feel bad about it, feel like 2-nd grade pilot and I don't like it. You can say, "fly cheaper smaller T2 ships - ceptors or af's", but it's exactly the point, that is being 2-nd grade, not being able to field what the majority is using, always going for a cheaper, less useful option. Tbh, I'm quite tired of feeling as 2-nd grade pilot and tagging along HAC, command ship gangs in T1 crap or T2 frig. So, is it possible for me to have fun in this game or should I get and alt, or grab my credit card and become a GTC seller?

You need some passive income. The easiest form of passive income (that I know of) is datacore farming. You can make upwards of 200+ mill a month if you run 5 mech engineer agents.

Don't PvP as often... or don't take as many risks.

yeah i wish hac/recon insurance was a bit more inline, they are so fun to fly but very painful to lose.
Remember electronic frigs, heavy dictors and newly improved interceptors are coming for those of us that are poor but want to be useful in pimped out gangs.

Edited by: Sirex007 on 01/11/2007 20:59:57 tbh i wouldnt count on them by any means, but you must be pretty unlucky. - i see a faction spawn about once a week. - had 2 in a row (between 2 systems) once though.

Fly cheaper ships.
Or do manufacturing and trading, which is where the real money (and easy money, at that) is if you know what you're doing.

The whole point of this thread is to find a way NOT to fly cheaper ships, as now nearly everyone flies expensive ships, unless you call HAC's and staff cheap. For manufacturing you need an alt, same for the most forms of trading.

The whole point of pvp in Eve is that it hurts to loose things. There are ways of making isk in Eve without grinding or buying isk, but you have to know what you doing. But I doubt anyone will actually tell you how the do it.
If all fails, and you have quite a bit of sp and pvp experience you could always try and find a pvp corp that will pay for your ships or at least give you a heavy discount.
