Edited by: Cygnus Zhada on 02/11/2007 10:43:29 Both really. But it also depends on your playstyle, However you could go full drones and not bother with guns for a LONG time (if you so wanted to) but if you focus on guns you still need drones.

Your aim is a dominix with t2 heavy drones.
Its about the ship bonus's, there are more ships with good drone bonus's than there are with guns. (for Gallante)
Personally I reached 3m in drones before I started thinking about tech2 guns. Even then Im training the guns for PvP, so if you intend on carebearing for a while longer drones are ftw! :)

Sure...Dominix with tech 2 heavy drones...if you're a pansy. What you're aiming for is an Ishtar with tech 2 heavy drones.

I went for guns, drones are too annoying for me to use as a primary weapon system.

Get your tank before you get your gank. That's what I've always been told. Good advice to follow. It also depends what role you want to fill as well. Getting your gun skills up lets you do more damage with blasters & rails. Blasters for up close, rails for longer range. If you are going to fly a battleship you can either make a blasterathon, which can do a lot of damage up close & personal, and you need a good tank. or a sniperathon, with 425mm rails can shoot people around 150 km away. Up to you though.

This is so true. Drones are so buggy and the interface so poor that drones will make you pull your hair out in clumps. Recalling drones in a situation that requires speedy compliance, you can bet that 2 will get stuck together
If carebearing is your deal then drones are equally annoying in missions --

Drones give the most benefit for the least ammount of work/training. Guns require A) good fitting and mods and B) combat movement to hit stuff effectively. Drones you just agro everything, plop em out and go to town.

I trained up drones and my tank first. Level 4 missions are a breeze in a domi. I'm 15 months into the game now and just now getting serious about training gunnery skillz.

Short answer is YES. You will need to train for both, however i'd primarily train for drones first, then work your gunnery skills behind it. Most of your good combat ships have nice drone bonus' so the better your drone skills, the better your ship. Your gunnery will eventually help add on DPS, and make for some naughty ships in the future.

What he says.
After that, guns. Drones are a wonderful secondary but making them primary will just mean losses unless your lucky.
In PVE drones will take out the frigs while you target your primary then join you in primary (after relocating to kill that really nasty roid or other inanimate object).
In PVP, close up, blasters in a boat with damage bonus, then drones so you can scoop em up when targetted and release a second later. Highly ennoying tactic for the guy trying to lock them.
My personal choice of drones, T2 Meds, heavies are just large metal objects waiting to shot.

I've only been playing the game for ~8 days so I can't give any long term advice. However, I can tell you from experience that Drones are a big help.
I was having a hard time completing some kill-missions. I could not kill enough of the enemy fast enough to keep them from beating my ship up. Then I got a Drone-drop. I trained Combat Drone I and started using it. Wow, what a difference. I kill ships at least twice as fast as before.
Every one of the comments from the longer-playing folks is likely to be valid, but from a new player's perspective, I'd recommend training Drones to at least a low level to help yourself out.

Actualy after reading what I just wrote it makes it sound like only train drones after you have tech2 everything guns, this isnt what i meant. I agree that drones are very important I just rec you up a level or 3 in guns before the drones, then go one gunnery skill (trajectory etc) before another drone skill.
So, both with focus on guns as drones will help you with a lot less skilling in the pocket.

The answer to your question depends on what you want to start out doing. I started out as a pirate (it could be argued I'm still starting out), and guns are the key to the gank of a PvP Incursus. But before moving on to a Thorax I had to get drones trained up as well, and by the time I get into my Vexor I'll want to max or nearly max several drone skills. Also before moving up to a cruiser I put a lot of skill points into my tank.
I imagine if you're interested in mining, you'll focus on drones more right from the beginning. Also, PvE is more forgiving of poor gunnery skills and a weak tank than PvP.

Both. Why gimp yourself by using just half a weapon system? Most gallente ships are designed for the combo of guns + drones.
Get reasonable skills at both, then focus more on whichever you like more.
