on the whole "that's an insane religious/cultural thingie" wrap your minds around this:
parrents refusing to vacinate their children agaisnt stuff like poilo, measles and so on because its agaisnt their religion. yes that's people with wistern standards and catholic religion. then there's the "barbaric" taliban that are allowing it ..

On the menu for death penalties we have electrocution which has been giving way for quite some time to Gas and more infamous, lethal injection which is actually standing trial at the moment.
Electric chair at this point has become a piece of history more or less. I really can't even remember the last time I heard of a convict going to the chair.

For instance, the other way around, the "American way" of not even spanking your children when they do something monumentally stupid (and in direct defience of you sometimes), I personally find that equally pathetic as the "beat up your family whenever you want" approach.
I did get spanked when I did stupid things as a little kid, my mother was the "never touch the children" type, my father was the "belt over the ass and slap on the face is ok" type... between the two of them, they made sure I only got an ass-whooping only when I did richly deserve it.

was trying to point out that people are saying it's "barbaric" or whatever it is you want to call it that in middle eastern countries wife/child beating is normal, yet here in the "civilised" west there are parrents that are willing to let their children DIE to measles/polio beacase theye dont allow their children to get vacinated cause of their religion. yet apearantly people are even FAKING religious reason not to vacinate their children! theye are gambling with their childrens live and use excusees to hide behind a religion theye dotn even follow!
so tell me, wich is more brutal? beating your wife and children or be willing to let them die and use something you dont even believe in as an excuse!

i cant believe almost everyone here believes fox news and thinks what the saudi was teaching the kids was wrong?
any of u ever watched Dr Phil or the other crap ass shows with women fighting and men beating the crap out of each other? ohhh yeah i forgot thats civilized but the rest of the world isnt right?

I'm the OP. And I read the transcript. What part of giving a woman a light beating is OK? The messsage is - the transcript. You agree with it? I don't need to send you a private message. I understand it completely.

It is culturally not religiously based. There is vague reference to covering in the qu-ran, but nothing that justifies the burqa. Same goes for education. Take a look at Mohammeds wife for example and his daughter. His wife was older, educated and a very succesful business woman. His daughter, also well educated, and considered to be one of the deepest spiritual thinkers of her time, and according to some views, the heir to mohammeds spiritual thinking. Wahhabist thinking as found in Saudi Arabia intentionally turned back the clock on spiritual interpretation and womens rights. It does not represent the true nature of Islam, as does not fundamentalist christianity.

When people in the west talk about gender equality, they mean equality under law. In Islamic countries men and women have different rights because they try to base their law system on Koran. They admit to it and will actually try to convince you that this is fair. And they should be different because men and women are different. Which sort of conjures up images of segregation in Unites States that was done under the slogan of "separate but equal" where one party was definitely getting a poor treatment. Islam would have you believe in the same thing in respect to women and men, that they should have different rights under Koran which is the law. In the extreme this leads to, for example, women being unable to have public jobs because that's the right and responsibility of men.
