I've been looking at the database but I don't get it.
apparantly the pulse lasers are lower range then beam lasers, but how do they compare damagewise?
can someone explain to me how you calaculate the damage of a laser?

Pulses and Beams of their equivalent size have the same damage modifer. Pulses shoot faster and have 25% better tracking, beams have better range.
Generally, for PvP, you want pulses, unless you're sniping, then you want beams.

Actually, pulses have 250% tracking of beams, that's +150% increase.
If you aren't skilled for tech2, go for beams. With scorch pulses are obviously far better. Beams are tough to fit and cap usage is just insane (it's broken, tbh) ---

Beams obviously mean you can dish DPS for a longer period of time.
Mission setups almost exclusively use beams as it would take to long to close down the NPC's.
Ratting setups I think use either, you can use a MWD on these setups (can't on a Mission setup due to them not working in missions ) and thus close the enemy down but a beam setup works fine.
PvP I think again are either depending on how you fly in PvP.
Personally I'd use beams unless you can use the very good pulses who's name escapes me which I believe can deal excellent DPS to decent ranges.
On a related note - it's advisable to use at least Amarr Navy crystals ( either from the LP store or bought ) and remember that crystals take a very short time to change so you can vary your optimum range as the range to target varies.

Beams are only useful and worth it at battleship sized guns.
You wont ever get the ranges from medium beams u get from medium rails and small beams are a waste of mentioning anyway (with the exception of "Dual light beam II"s on certain ships).
I wouldnt know how to fix beams.. but less cap usage and fitting (for medium and small beams at least) could be a good start.

Pulses are better than Beams up to about 40km (excluding T2 of course) once u reach T2 pulses are better up to like 60 km

Bit general, depends on the size.
I fly mainly BC and Cruisers and mainly mission - as a result beams are the way to go.

Actually, pulses have 250% tracking of beams, that's +150% increase. And they do 14% more DPS.

This is correct.
Beams are tough to fit, but your advantage in PvP with Amarr is range, if you dont start shooting earlier you are going to lose.
If you cant fit t2, fit beams.

Its the same way you do to everyother gun, the diference is that laser aways do em/thermal
what you do is, get the base cristal damage, multiply by the dmg modifier and divide by the rate of fire.
Train for pulse first, use scorch ammo, and them train beams for sniping and other setups...
