In one given season a Canadian Goose may travel thousands of miles while either migrating north or south (depending on the season). Now most people have taking a long distance trip one or more times it their life, and more likely then not on that long distance trip you have either gotten lost, or made a mistake in your navigation. A great mystery of the migration pattern of the Canadian Goose is how they navigate to make sure that they have proper nesting area for one evening or for an entire season (3).
The Canadian Goose is a remarkable animal because it can find its way in poor weather and in good weather. The reason that they must be good at navigation and planning a route for migration travel is because they need certain resources as they travel. Due to the fact that a Canadian Goose is a waterfowl they must navigate between rivers, ponds and lakes, having these resources allows the fowl to rest and have a proper habitat for feeding (3.)
Research into the migration pattern:
Banding over the years has become option that many researches have used in order to track the travels of the migrating birds. The birds are caught in the wild and banded with a ring that says the location, date and identification number. Also on this band there is a number for people to report back about the birdsÆ travels if they are caught or shot. Anyone who captures or shoots a bird with a band is asked where the bird was recovered, what health of the bird was, and the date at which they were recovered. This information is then used to analysis the travels of the birds, longevity, and reasons for death (3).
With advancements in technology we have now begun to use radar to track flocks of birds. With the use of radar we are now able to analysis speed of flight, altitude, and the number of birds that are following a particular flight pattern. Another way to track the migration of birds is the use of airline pilots; the information reported from airlines has increased the awareness of birds and the time of day in which they like to travel. The time of day in which birds like to travel is species specific. For example waterfowl like to travel at either day or night. They have ways to navigate at all hours of the day. Song birds on the other hand, prefer to travel during the night time, when predators are not as likely to pose a threat (3).
How they navigate:
It has been widely accepted that migrate birds such as the Canadian Goose use landscape as a navigational tool. As they migrate either north or south they look for cues in the landscape. As researches have spent more and more time observing the migration patterns of the waterfowl they have distinguished a few characteristics that repetitive. Researchers have noticed that at any sudden moment a flock of birds will change direction by 35 or 45 degrees. This is usually in response to some type of large landmark the birds remember or have seen in previous travels. IT has also been noticed that since waterfowl need bodies of water to rest and eat they will follow the contour of bodies of water for miles upon end. On nights that are clear you will normally see birds following the contour of the land. This works when they are able to find bodies of water to follow, but what about birds that do not have water contours to follow? Well in this case they will use the sun and the stars at night to navigate to the same exact nesting place as the year before. This theory was proven when a study was performed in a laboratory that replicated the sky at night. Birds were placed in an environment that leads them to believe that they were flying during the night hours, when they were really not traveling anywhere at all. The Canadian Goose has a very keen eye sight, this allows for them to see the constellations and patterns in the stars. In the experiment used to prove this theory, the constellations and sun was rotated around the room.

As the position of the constellations changed and the sun position changed so did the direction of the birdÆs flight (3).
People have always had a theory that birds have a built in compass. They are responsive to the magnetic field of the earth. This theory seems to also be very little because radar statistics show that Canadian Geese and other migratory birds have traveled at night when the fog has been bad and the visibility of the stars was impossible. Even with the added difficulty the birds were able to stay exactly on course throughout the flight. Research has been done on pigeons and gulls that support the theory of bird having a built in compass. It seems that the bird respond to the earthÆs magnetic field just as a compass would. Scientist have found iron rich tissue in the brains of many birds, this also supports the theory because the tissue would presumably respond to the magnetic earth just as a compass (3).
Flight Behavior:
The Canadian goose are graceful and smooth in their flight appearing to glide through the air with ease and assurance. The formation of the flying V-shape has made the trek of the Canadian goose recognizable to may. This formation is not just for looks or recognition, no it serves a purpose in the miles upon miles that these birds travel in a year. Flying in the V-formation allows for the air resistance to be greatly reduced, this allows the birds to fly 71 percent further in a formation then if they tried to fly alone. According to Kim Breen "by positioning itself slightly to one side and behind the birds ahead, a goose gets lift from the air currents coming off the wing tips of the birds ahead. The rising air current from the bird in front saves energy on the lift-up phase of the wing beat." Mush like other birds the Canadian goose has a strong downward wing beat, but a much weaker muscle to do the up-lift wing beat. The borrowed air current from the bird directly ahead allows for the bird to complete the up-lift stroke easily and maintain that stroke for longer periods (2.)
With the first bird being under more stress then the rest of the flock for the migration to the south and to the north, many people believed that the Canadian goose that leads the flock changes from time to time. This can become evident when you watch a flock of geese progress and fly for hours upon end with out any break. Something that is unique is that the lead bird will always be a gander. Another unique aspect to the flight of a Canadian goose is the fact that the lead gander will always begin the flight by calling out and making motions to the sky, and will always be the leader at the end of the migration travels for the day and once they have reached the nesting grounds for the season (2.)
Along for the Flight:
All flights aboard Canadian goose airlines flight number 3124, destination Atlanta, Georgia please climb underneath the feathers and strap yourself in for the flight. Now I am sure this is not what it sounds like when the geese are squeaking and talking before they take off. However, they have been know to carry passengers along with them as they make this migration from the north to the south and from the south back to the north. It has been noted from time to time that the Canadian goose will carry passengers such as hummingbirds and other smaller avian to the warmer climates in the spring. The smaller birds will be found nesting underneath the thick feather coating of the Canadian goose, they are protected from the winds and do not apply much more stress to the birds because they are so light.

This is fun but doesnt retain my attention like drunken public vent bombardment. That **** is priceless. 10 minutes of research = about 5 logins for public vent/TS info.

Its real simple. Google public vent postings...gather their info and what not. Then start ****ing them off. Its best to have a partner get in there with you an passively record the encounters for later laughs.
