Mining drones dont gather as much ore as a mining laser but can be very beneficial in large numbers, I'm not sure why you arent recieving any ore from the mining drone, try using it without activating your lasers and see if any ore appears in your cargo, is not then you may need to file a petition.

Edited by: Bitex on 29/02/2004 11:59:30 The ore won't go into your cargo piece by piece, but only when it has a certain size. Maybe the drone has so low output that it takes a long time for it to show up in cargohold. Put simpler, the cargohold only updates when you have mined a certain amount of ore.

I tried my mining drone for the first time today, and had exactly the same problem. I did switch off my laser to see what was happening, but no ore arrived. I guess we're doing something wrong. The little beggar was darting about all over the place, but didn't seem to bother much with the asteroid I'd actually targeted. What should we see when we launch these things? I'd expected to see it shuttle back and fore between the targeted asteroid and the ship, but that's not the way it looked. Should we orbit closer to the rock? Should we not orbit at all and remain stationary? Should the ore total update when we scoop the drone? (it didn't). Also, are mining drones likely to be targeted by NPC pirates? i.e should we scoop them at the first sign of trouble?

I believe you need to set the drone to auto-repeat. I had the same problem but then changed to this setting and the drone seemed to go to work.

Edited by: Thorion Mortisfilius on 01/03/2004 04:30:41 Mining drones, in my opinion, are very inefficient. I had a lot of trouble with mine (worse than trying to get the kids to do their chores) but after some tests I discovered this info. Maybe it'll help. First off, my mining lasers filled my hold faster than the drones can get a single load. When this happens they just dump their load in space. Second they contributed very little when I started jettison containers and kept my hold partially emptied. Something like 80 units per trip. And last, the closer you are to the asteroid, and their working area, the more control you have over them. They don't seem to wander off aimlessly. You got hit the Mine Repeatedly, what I less then affectionately call the Remind Repeatedly button for a continuous run. Or the closest they come to that.

I think that drones dont do much if they are outside your control range.
Get to within 5,000m of the asteroid and try again with them. Your control should be better at that distance.

That could well be it. I usually mine from 7.5km orbit distance. I don't recall whether the control range is stated in the skill description, but I'll have another go from closer in. I did try orbiting closer at 2.5km, just to shorten the transit time for the drone, and it didn't seem better, but I may not have waited long enough to see the ore come in. I'll try again "You can get further with a kind word and a gun than you can with just a kind word." |

I use 3 mining droids (mining droid skill to lvl3). The dont mine a massive amount but on for example Pyro.. i get 108 units of ore approx every minute or so.
Very rough figure but what it means is that they dont mine a lot by them selves but.. they are good for ninja mining where you need to fill up asap.
Re npc rats, you will lose the droids if you keep them working, get them scooped asap. I currently can only use 3 drones at a time, when the rats appear i scoop the miners and deploy some hammerheads. Works very well for me against 0.4 and above rats. Not really tested against any bigger boys though.
