So the linux client apparently only works for three distros. Why would you guys go through all the trouble of making a linux client and then only releasing it for three distros? I would really like a universal installer...

And I'm upset that the Mac stuff only works for Intel Macs, but you don't see my whining.

thats because non intel macs will never be compatible unless they rewrite the entire client
also, the rpm version of the linux client could easily be adapted for any distro if you put some effort into it

Hmm looks like I just saw it ;)
This is hardly CCP's fault, but a crappy issue that linux has with so many distros. Surely there are tools on other Linuxes to use .deb packages? If there are, have you tried them?
TBH we should be thankful that CCP has given official support to Linux. Maybe I'm living in LaLa Land, but I'm hoping Eve can attract a lot of attention and new subscribers with this, which may give them the motivation to actually make a native client for Linux/Mac. (after all, it shouldnt be too hard, especially since they are using Python). Yes changing from DX to OpenGL would be the challenge.

We officially support a few Linux distros but the EVE client may work on many more.

Wtf ? No Ati support ? Are you kidding me ? I really had high hopes for the linux/mac client, but this is just ridiculous.

Ain't the ATI driver support supposed to suck for linux, I would guess this is why it won't work with the emulation. May have changed since I last tried.

This is ATI's fault and not transgaming/ccp. For years ATI basically didn't think they needed to really put much work into their linux drivers. As a result, almost everything related to graphic acceleration in linux works 10x better with NVIDIA.

Edited by: Neuneko on 05/11/2007 01:02:54 Eve will work with ATI. Really though with the new completely open source ATI drivers and source code. (this includes fglrx) It will not take long for ATI's drivers to kick the **** outa nvidia's. Hell I can attest to getting between 40-70 more fps in all games I play on linux with the new open source fglrx drivers. I can even run compiz fusion without hassle now.
Also check this out... http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=897&num=1 That would be entirely impossible 2 months ago.

This is why linux is crap. You actually have to make your software to work with those hundred and one distros.
Be happy that they support as many as 3 of those. ---

I must ask how many Linux programs work on a large range of distros without some tweaking?
If you work with Linux you really have to accept that there are far too many forms of it to guarantee that any given program, besides possibly the most basic of them, will work with all of them. Companies should focus on guaranteeing that they work with the most popular and hope that ways can be found to make them work with the rest. It's just too broad of a field to guarantee 100% success.
Hell, you can't even guarantee that any given Windows product will work with all hardware, even though it's using the exact same OS.

I am still in shock that CCP decided to branch out their game to other OS. 1 year ago i tried playing EVE on cedega with no luck, and concluded that this type of situation will never come...
Anyway, CCP picked 3 of the most popular Linux distro, no surprise there. I am sure it will be able to work with other flavors with a lot of tweaking. Linux is the "poor mans' do it yourself OS" isn't it?

God, linux warriors really can wind a guy up.
You've got to remember the simple fact that every linux noob in the world should know:
supported != will not work
For people that are used to buggering around endlessly for ages to get a windows game to work on their flashy kde suse desktop with animated icons I'd say you should be happy you have a native client at all.
Cheer up pals.

Indeed.
And I too am surprised that there's a Linux AND Mac client. I never thought I'd see the day.
And I'm sure it won't be long after the patch that a Mac user complains that they can't use it as well on their MacOS version as they can their bootcamp Windows install. There's always one in the crowd.

i bet that if you have your non-ubuntu, non-debian DIY distro tweaked up, tuned and all dependencies fixored to a fine point, EvE will run just peachy on it. Its just if supporting stuff on windoze boxes is a nightmarish hell of weird configuration problems, having every duct-tape-and-string nix box quirk on your plate would drive every support person nuts, even if there were a whole army of em.
and that's all i gots to say 'bout that. However, I still think EvE needs more and better tactical warning sounds.

To answer a few questions.
While we officially only support 3 distributions the Linux client WILL work on other distro's.
We are distributing the following installers. RPM (standard, Mandriva and Suse) DEB TGZ
This means that you are free to install it on any distribution you like. We are writing up our support documents with the 3 supported distro's in mind so support for your 'other distro' might not be the best but we are not going to turn you away just for having it on another distro (personally I am running it on Fedora, being Red Hat certified and all) internally so I know it works on other distro's).
ATI Drivers Well blame ATi here, they do not support most of the needed functions, there are some really good 3rd party drivers, that will work and allow you to run EVE on an ATi card, but our support people do not know all of them nor can we train them in all of them so we can not officially support them at this point. If ATi improve their drivers this will of course change.
We are preparing a Dev Blog to better answer all this common questions and more (mostly we will be providing links to new FAQ articles that answer the questions).
