Hi guys, I had a really strange encounter the other day.
And I'm sure we are dealing with a cheat/hax/exploit or whatever you guys call it. I was hoping to get a little feedback on my story found here, but so far I've had no luck. Should I file a petition?

I think this guy angered an entire pantheon of Gods. But then again, I always knew killswitch was an evil crakz0r :D
Dunno, if it actually happened like that I'd rate it as a 10.0 on my wierd-****-o-meter. -------------------------

Downloading any kind of programs from other players is a likely source of the game hack.
I heard some people say it's possible to put code in mpg files, but that sounds doubtful. Anyone know for sure?

Yes, I know for sure. It's completely impossible to alter a DivX or WMV encoded movie to act as a carrier for trojan. Sin 1st was being a trollish twip.

Not completley true :-) you CAN put code in divx/mp3's etc but as they don't get "executed" it will be never be run and thus infect your system, also im sure that they would not sound very good or make for good viewing!
Happy Eve'ing :-)

Let me put it like this:
Using the actual DivX or Microsoft codecs, I've yet heard of a method to alter the movie/audio file that would not render the file unplayable by the codec. I'm more familiar with the MS codecs than DivX as my company has an affiliate that deals with multimedia encoding, streaming and digital rights management using WM9. Using some of the 3rd party, open source DivX hacks could be another story entirely and on your head. But even then, it'd prolly be easier to make the installer the trojan.
This urban legend has been bandied about before. Now will yall quit trying to scare the uninformed? Or at least use some of the better urban legends like the story of the virus that can cause your monitor to explode, raining shards of glass into the victim's face. Least that one has gore in it

You can make movie files open weblinks automatically, so you could use that in a malicious manner - although an IE window opening up can be a bit of a giveaway. ______________________________________________
Never argue with idiots. They will just drag it down to their level, and then beat you through experience. |

Edited by: Siddy on 01/03/2004 08:29:19 abaut hacking/remotecontrol exploit (yes.. i want this treadh locked)
u cant direktly controll other player ship nor use modules remotely unles u are running remote control program for urself, meaning u whuld be automatikly awear of such program running because they wount run whitout user authrisation( that kind of program whuld be exstreamly sophistikated and whuld take lots of time/skills to make)
But.. due to crappy code of EVE u can make it crash using some sort of vulnarable codestream that causes it ( remeber thous CTD wen u try to lock on NPC ? u crash.. CCP has fixed it.. but....)
if u can figure that out u can use sertain takticks to cause other players to CTD - ofcorse the chanse is very remote and exstreamly random not resultting 100% sucses (if u happen to CTD 3 times in row near some player it mosty pure accident caused by some weirdass mix of bugged code - and not intentional)
and because this is MMORPG, some ppls who dont have girlfrend wants to show what they are made of :)
anyway, it whuld require exstreamly Dirty hacking not worth the risk to control other PC/use it to bounce and doubht anyone capable of it whuld waste his skills to hack EVE
