My Eve Online career intension is to be a scout for a fleet.
What strategies and tactics are used
I presume a recon probe launcher is needed. What scan probes do you need and how do you use them
All advice would be very much appreciated.

Not really. In fleets, a cov ops is used mostly as an intel gathering tool, and to set up spots for snipers to warp in. You do want to have a probe launcher equipped though in case it's needed. As for probes, my alt just uses snoop, fathom and spook probes.
In gang PvP though, cov ops are often used to probe out ratting ships/safespotted ships.
Either way, if you want to be a good cov ops pilot you need to have cov ops trained to V so you can get enough CPU on your ship to use everything. You'll also need a cov ops cloak (obviously), and very good probing skills. ------------

Cov Ops are both very useful in small gangs and fleets. They provide a versatility that no other ship can in a lot of situations.
I have flown with many experienced PvP pilots who were still slightly taken back as to what can be done with them when there is a skilled dedicated CovOps pilot in the gang.

Edited by: Cygnus Zhada on 04/11/2007 16:25:18 You don't need covops trained to 5. You can fit quite easily a cloak, recon launcher, T2 MWD, T2 24k point, dampener and speedmods in low. That is if you have a helios or the Anathema, the Cheetah is severely crippled in that department, in favor of speed.

You don't just have to be covops to be a fleet scout.
Take a roaming gang for instance, you take a +1 to your gang, meaning you stay one system ahead of your gang at all times. This is typically done in a ceptor or a dictor due to speed. You jump into the system, report on any sort of hostile presence in the area (How many are in local, is there a bubble on the gate you just jumped into, is there a station in system, does a quick scan of the asteroid belts reveal anything). If there's a gate camp, remain cloaked, whip out scanner, and hit the scan button, you've now got all the ship types in the camp, then you go ahead and take note of the important targets by name, they become primaries. Your next job is to get the hell out of the camp.
In the event there's no camp, but there are a few people in system, first do a directional scan from the gate and see if there's any people on your scan, if not go to a planet cluster and repeat. Once you get a hit on your scanner, narrow it down first by degree and then range until you've only got one or two belts on your scanner, Let your gang know you're in warp to the presumed spot, get a tackle on the target and call in the reinforcements. Survive until relief comes in and can get points.
Obviously my methods and tactics may differ from other people's but I've been flying point for roaming gangs for a long time... so if you see me enter local... yarrr

Edited by: Sangxianc on 04/11/2007 23:06:39 Canine Fiend knows what he's talking about so listen to him. I believe most people would classify "fleet scout" and "fleet cov ops" as different jobs.
The scout(s) move ahead of the fleet to see what's happening (and occasionally even has to head 10-15 jumps ahead to scout out a possible destination if there are two possible destinations for the fleet - more common with roaming gangs) and find out about gate camps and enemy fleet locations etc then basically just becomes another tackler when the battle comes. You need an inty for this. The fleet commander will usually just pick someone from the support fleet who they trust as capable and send them off so it's more a role of inty pilots in general than a specialisation. Your best tactic is to do what you're told to.
The cov ops pilot sets up combat warp-ins at the correct range and also bookmarks on-grid but 400-500km away from the enemy fleet which act as an inital warp-in so everyone can load before starting the fight. When the battle starts they generally stay out of the way. You'll also try to scan enemy safespots etc (but good luck with this because any competent fleet commander will move their fleet often enough when they're hiding that you won't scan them down.) Here is an excellent guide to scan probes. Read that and try it out on SiSi with a friend. I've never been a proper cov ops pilot though so you probably want to find someone with more experience than I have to explain the finer details of this role to you.
Anyway the best thing you could do is train for inties or cov ops and get involved, you'll pick it up pretty quickly once you start doing it.
disclaimer: this is just from my experience and I haven't played actively for a while *COUGH OVER A YEAR COUGH* so fleet tactics may have changed in the meantime.
