Not a whine.
I got blowed up by a Mothership smartbomb this weekend. Low-sec gate camper, I had't played in a while and was trying to move a few skillbooks and such. So, I load up a Crow with a nano, instab, and overdrive and get on my way. I knew I was flying through dangerous systems, and due to not playing for a while made some silly mistakes, but I digress.
So, I'm thinking I should be "all but safe" in my 'ceptor and I warp to a gate where I see the blinking players in my overview. Before I'm even out of warp I'm taking damage (well timed smart-bombs from the Mothership) and frantically clicking jump. Ship goes, I'm in my pod, and again I'm frantically trying to jump.
But I can't jump. The MS's buddies lock me, scramble me, and blow me up.
Again, I'm not whining, I'm just trying to figure out how to deal with this all in the future and I am curious as to why I could not jump once in the pod. I know that as far as the ship itself goes, it was likely dead before I even saw the damage messages, but would think that I would have been able to jump through once in my pod.
Please educate me as to why this is. ----- You're not what you are, you're just what you do! So it ends with their butts and it starts with your shoe! - Awesome Car Fun Maker |

How helpful was that
You may have experienced some lag after your ship got destroyed, this may have prevented you from jumping thought the gate.
Its also possible that a session change is still being sorted out from the first attempt at activating gate by you whilst still in your ship.
There is always some delay when jumping to another system due to session change etc, the gate campers use this to their advantage.
Any way the guy is right about taking time to scan possible points where you may encounter trouble.

You are misunderstanding my question.
I know tons of things I could have done to avoid it -- had a scout, checked the map, etc.
What I want to know is why could I not jump once I hit the gate. My crow survived (or seemed to) for about 5 seconds, allowing me to click jump multiple times before I exploded. Then, I was sitting in my pod for about 8 seconds before seeing the scramble message and, again, was clicking jump (about 10 times) and nothing happened.
This is not a whine, I just want to know why I couldn't jump -- I've had this happen a few times and want to know the mechanic here. ----- You're not what you are, you're just what you do! So it ends with their butts and it starts with your shoe! - Awesome Car Fun Maker |

Edited by: Motokko on 05/11/2007 18:58:40 For transporting low volume expensive goods such as skill books and stuff you might want to try using a nano'd stabber. Its tough enough to survive some smart bombing and warps off pretty damn quick with the right setup. I've had some success with it myself but I've never come up against a mothership.

As far as I know, when you 'switch' from ship to pod, you go through a Session Change, meaning you have to wait 30 seconds till you can initiate another Session Change (i.e Jumping through a Gate).

My bad. I don't know why you couldn't jump. Lag? I know I've mashed warp in a few instances and my ship visibly warped off only to explode anyway. -- Support fixing the EVE UI

Hm, dismount lag. The negative side of that allows enemies to wtfpwn your pod while you're being popped out of your rig. The only alternative you have there is to eject before your ship is totally wiped, usually for me that's when I'm well into structure.
Had a run in this weekend with a 0.0 gatecamp as I came through that got me because of the lag. I was kicked from my ship before the ship even registered as destroyed, and was podded before I could control my ship from the dismount lag.
The lesson? Make damned sure your graphics settings are tweaked to operate efficiently, rather than beautifully. At least while you're in hostile territory.

While in 'warp to 0' to the gate, engage autopilot. As soon as you come out warp, the autopilot should take you through. And as soon as the screen says 'jumping' and your ship starts to disappear, turn autopilot off.

Correct, but if you're quick enough, like smashing jump before your ship pops, you can make it through. I've done it and i've seen it happen a couple of times _______ shigs |

No, I don't think I lost the ship due to an exploit or anything. And it isn't like I lost my arse to it (a few rig BPO's, and ~20m in skillbooks, another maybe ~40m in implants.) I'm reasonably sure the guy had me dead to rights, I'm just wanting to understand the mechanic -- and have gotten some good answers.
Besides, CCP hates me and has never reimbursed me, even when I was one of 40 folks stuck on a gate who GM's had to manually move. I had logged off (and hence was not moved), got killed about 3 hours after logging, petitioned it, and was told "our logs show no problems" and then threatened with a "mark on my account and a temp ban" if I continued pursuing the issue. So, petitioning CCP is useless (and I swear by my good name that I have never petitioned a loss I felt was not due to serious issues beyond my control.) ----- You're not what you are, you're just what you do! This.
All session changes have timers, this is no different. You can test it yourself in high sec with a newb ship. warp to gate, eject, click jump, make note of what appears in your log.
Its by design, and unrelated to lag, tho lab may occur of course. The same thing will happen if you get popped on a station btw...however your agression timer is cleared, and that is longer....so depending on how you look at it....

One other possibility is there could have been a 'traffic advisory'. This is relatively new so it may not have been around when you were playing. As I understand it, basically you can't jump when there are too many players trying to get through a system. This would seem less likely though as I mostly notice traffic advisories in high-sec.

Pot, meet kettle. If you had bothered to read a few more posts down instead of rushing to flame, you would have seen that he apologized.
To the OP, you probably got killed because you exited warp just as a smartbomb went off, and just before you clicked on the gate to jump (or rather, the server recognized you out of warp, SBs going off, and jump-click in that order).
I use the same technique all the time, although I haven't met a camping mom yet. So lag+bad luck is my guess.

Fixed.
To the OP. As has been said, it seems that you were the victim of a bit of lag and a session change. If you suspect a gate camp, try mounting plates/shield extenders to survive the blast of a smartbomb. Then while in warp, select the autopilot (to take you through) and click on a planet and mash "warp to" if you suspect any shennanigans.

No, I already know their answer, and the less I deal with CCP customer service, the happier I am playing EVE.
I refuse to petition unless absolutely, incredulously necessary.
Besides, I think the session change answer is precisely what happened. Why waste my and CCP's time on what was, as far as I can tell, my own fault combined with a little bad luck? ----- You're not what you are, you're just what you do! I am actually surprised this got buried... this is an incredibly useful piece of advice for the post-'warp to 0' EvE. In my experience, it has been that this command takes place on the server side rather than the client, and isn't impacted heavily by lag. There is still a small slice of time where you can get popped, and interdictors can still hump you good... but it has made my 0.0 runs in interceptors non-eventful.

Gotta love how getting blown up causes a session change, preventing you from leaving the system temporarily, yet letting the other guy pod you which then forces another session change to give you your clone.
