Hm, honestly i have to say that dedicating a char to research and manufactoring is not possible for a newbie.
You will not find a free lab-spot to rent. I try this for weeks but every station with research facility is fully rented. The first thing i do every time i log in is fly to every station in 5-6 jumps radius and look for a free lab spot... but i had no luck for 3 weeks now. I even took a trip in deep 0.0 space once, but again no free labs. :(
You still could do manufactoring since there are enough free factories, but you need to buy fully researched blueprints, since you cannot research on your own.
Then research agents... you'll need some special science skills to get access to them. Quantum Physics for example... but all of these skills need Science 5 and another skill to 5 (engineering or electronics or others) to learn, so it may take some time. Finding them on the other hand is really easy. Just look for NPC-Corps with an research department. "Show Info" of the corp, go to Agent-Tab and scroll through the list of agents until you find the right department.

first you have to do missions for normal agents , pick a corp that has r&d department and start working up the corporate ladder :) . by the time u get enough rating for a good lvl 3 research agent you should have some stuff to sell to finance a cruiser and some skills . possibly 1-2 weeks work as well , so train the skills u want for the research agent .
i gotta warn you tho , agent running is BOOORING , i wouldnt recommend a new player going that way . -------------------------

I too have chosen the scientist profession during the creation of my character. Yet upon reading this I understand this is not a viable option for a new player like myself. What exactly is a good set of things to do then? First do some mining while training skills in science and such? Or..agent missions? Ie: what have all the other scientists done to actually -be- a scientist?

mining is easy and avilable , risky free income . you might want to spend a couple of days mining to finance skills and a better ship . after that , u can hunt npcs or maybe join a corp and do some team play .
i dont think there many non-alt scientist chars in eve , its still a pretty limited aspect of the game . do whatever is fun for you , and adjust when you hit a snag .

So basically there is nothing that I can do with my scientist carreer choice right now except improve it in skills. Which is wise only when I have some other skills to improve my survivability.
Research then is only practical at a much later stage?

If you can stand the missions Agent Running can be profitable.
If you want to dedicate yourself to it then there are some basic you should know...
1) Speed... Get your Navigation, Afterburner and Acceleration Control skills to at least level 4 asap.
2) Social skills... One of the only areas of skills where the Charisma attribute comes in handy. The key skills are
Social - Gives you a higher standing increase per mission Negotiations - Gets you a higher reward permission by boosting the agent quality Connections - Will give you approximately 0.4 standing for each level. So if you train it to level 4 will add 1.6 or so onto your standings which will make better agents available sooner.
I suggest if you are serious about agent running as a career that you get all these trained to level 4 as soon as possible. (Mine are all at level 5).
3) Finding agents - To find the agents that are available to you simply do a 'SHOW INFO' on an NPC Corporation that you are interested in. Then select AGENTS tab. This will show you a list of divisions within the Corporations (i.e Manufacturing, Public Relations, Security etc).
If you click on one of the divisions it will give you a list of agents - Those you can work for will be listed first and those you can't work for will be towards the bottom. To use these agents simply note their location and travel to their station.
(Advice. Try and use agents as far down the list as you can. These will be better quality/higher level and hence will give you better rewards and higher standing gain)
(Note. The Corporation type you select and the division of the agent WILL have an effect on the missions you get given. An agent in the security division of the Amarr Navy will give you a lot more kill missions than a manufacturing agent with Carthum Conglomerate for instance)
4) Gaining new agents. You gain new agents by increasing your standings with their corporation. Everyone should have enough standings to at least start off with some level 1 agents. As you do missions for the agents you get standing rewards. As these increase (very slowly) you will find other better agents will make themselves available to you. As described above there are various ways to speed up the standing gain by using skills.
Also some mission are classed as IMPORTANT... these will have a much bigger effect on your standing than regular kill/courier missions. Rejecting or failing missions will remove some standing and thus make it longer to get new agents.
General Tips
Don't hop around NPC Corporations too much (at least not at the start). Concentrate on getting good standing with one and gaining their best level 3 agents. Level 3 agents will randomly drop implant missions and this is where you can make cash agent running...
Stations - Try and find stations with more than one agent. You will often find that you can run multiple mission at the same time (often to the same place) which can save a lot of time. I generally use a station with 6 agents (of different levels)and often have 5 missions on the go at once (sometimes if I am really lucky all going to the same place). This can really help boost cash generation and standing gain.
Be prepared. Make sure you are using ships appropriate for missions. Something fast with decent cargo hold if possible. Also it is possible to get ahead of yourself on missions i.e. start getting level 2 kill missions while still flying a frigate, level 3 kill missions while still in a cruiser. These can be completed in those ship types but you do need some combat experience and skills. If you are still fairly new then best thing is to get a more experienced player to help you out.
Make sure you have the right modules with you. I personally fit my fit for speed MWD and Nanofibres in low slots when running missions. But I also carry a full set of cargo expanders just in case a pickup is a bit larger.
Practice. Practice makes perfect with agent running. There are so many little 'agent runner' tricks to save time that I can't list them all here but you will get to know as you play. i.e. - Keeping a stock of minerals in your agent's station to auto-complete missions - Remote buying the stuff you need to deliver at the station that you need to deliver it too and then auto-completing missions - Experiment with stations - Some agents in some station will constantly send you on long missions as they are isolated. Others will constantly have 3/4 jump missions for you. Find a good station and it will make life easier.
FINALLY one very handy thing agent runner thing
Open CHARACTER SHEET - Click STANDINGS - Click 'LIKED BY TAB' - Scroll down to CORPORATIONS until you see the corporation that you are currently working for then RIGHT CLICK on the corporation name and select SHOW TRANSACTIONS. Useful tool!
