It is not one physical server, it is one logical shard.
The scaling issues from concurrency generally have little effect in gameplay beyond concurrent use of a single "solar system". In other massively online games, generally a single "zone" is managed by a single back end process and this is where the scaling issue of concurrency really find a choke point (The Jita Problem (tm))
That said, with such a massive system I imagine the market transactions alone generate enormous contention on the back end database (it helps when you can load it all up on a RAMSAN).

OK, it's a hard job to handle 40k users on one cluster, but they earn a lot of money with this cluster. I konw a lot of more stable clusters with more performance. when you have the right admins, it works. This cluster is f____ admined...

Most other developers manage to test and resolve most bugs and those patches you get (for free) after buying. CCP get money from every one of us, every month, they should be capable of releasing a patch.
Most other developers don't contend with 40k concurrent connections to the same shard. Most other developers run betas for people to test.
Afaik CCP recently ran a 'beta' test.It was called ARMAGEDDON DAY.............Remember that? /shudders

Yes I know of plenty stable clusters. Infact I got a Linux based cluster in my room atm. The issue arrives when it seems fines etc with a low load but then a high load demanding alot of the same resources, scripts and database access are all on at the same time. All it takes is 1 minor cleanup routine not to function properly and then bam, server crashes under high load. Before you comment you should fully understand the complexity of this cluster and everything that it has to deal with. --------------- What! Caldari have dps now... noooo Aye, T2 HAMs FTW!!!!! |

the complexity is unimportand. When you earn so much money with such a system it has to work. The technical features behind are unimportand. You don't sell a aeroplane, and when i falls down you say: Ok, from the 100.000 parts only one part crashes.... It has to be stable and redundant at every time. Or you sell it as beta.

I don't see 100+ people dying when Eve's servers crash as opposed to an airplane's crash.

Soo much negativity... go back to WoW. Speaking ofwhich, we got 17 grounded American AirForce planes here in the UK. They been in service for a while and seemed fine untill one crashed a few days ago in America and it is supposedly a development fault. I wonder if they were sold as betas ? --------------- What! noone is being killed, but the fact is the same. sell a running system or sell an sometimes running system. In stable times the speed is not as good as it could be...

Edited by: EunHjzjined on 06/11/2007 18:45:39 Luckily I docked in Jita with 2 minutes left on a 7 day skill train. Then the cluster-f*** happened.
And to think. I suffered through the weekend with several disconnects from high load.
I have the worst luck.
