Hi all,
I just committed my first act of piracy ever and ransomed the guy (sidenote: random pvp is fun as hell, as compared to fleet blobbing pvp which sucks ass), and I was just curious how some of you more experienced pirates work out how much you ransom your victims for?
The way I figure it is that there are four factors that go into it (assuming you don't have a ship scanner fit and don't know exactly what modules the guy's using): (1) age of the character, (2) what ship the victim is flying, (3) how certain it is that you'll win the fight, and (4) what you think he's willing to pay vs. what you think you'll make if you just blow him up.
What kind of rubric do you use for figuring out the exact amounts you want to ransom someone for? For example, I just got 35 million out of a 1 month old character flying a battlecruiser; I figured that would be roughly the expense of the ship by itself, and that if I blew him up I'd likely get a bunch of ****ty modules that wouldn't even be worth 35 million (unless it's an alt). Also, my victory was completely assured after about 5 seconds of fighting (ate through his shields and half his armor before I could even finish typing the ransom).
Anyway, thoughts or opinions?

I take class of ship, age of character, and I also make a note of how well the tank stood up against my assault when calculating. If they use missiles, check to see if it's faction or not.

( ( ((Age of Character in days * base cost of ship) * (insurance payout - insurance pay in)) + ((market average cost of ship + material cost of ship) / 2) + (0.5(Ship Market Value)) ) * 0 ) + random number
It's a little complicated, but it works.

I'd say 10-25% of the cost of the ship. Missioners get higher prices as they usually fit something nicer than most pvp'rs. Also if you think they have rigs up the price. Noob characters might not be worth ransoming.

I prefered the premium insurance cost of their ship, double that if their tank/damage was good =)
Ofc, ransoming newbie rifters for 1 isk just to give them a thrill is everlasting fun =) /* Whats a guy got to do to get a smile off around here */ |

Though I haven't been pirating in a week or so... I like my method the best so far out of those in the thread. Though I did like the one equation there.
My way is... Charge them whatever the hell price I need for some module I'm interested in buying.
If my wallet is saying 150mil... I need 200mil for a nice gistii module for my hulk? I request 60mil. If it turns out to be some CNR or something that I'm tackling... he might be pretty happy to pay such ransom.
Of coarse I'm an ******* and have never ever honoured a ransom. I'm a pirate looking for the most out of my activities.
The key to a good pirate is one... don't look like a pirate... always have positive concord standing. 2... be in a corp which is megacarebear sounding. "Hi sec mining corp of friends" lol great.
This has lead to a retriever warping in on me in a belt... i was just so amazed he'd done it.. I'd forgotten to turn on my modules to even start pirating him... and he locked me back and sent light drones on my cruiser. If I remember correctly his ransom was all of his wallet because he was a moron. He accepted death and than complained to my ceo who basically laughed at him.
I'm also anti-pirate at heart. I love looking like a tasty snack and than have pirates come meet me. I'm in a nice quick thorax or something. VERY CHEAP tech 2 loadout. Virtually no tank. Hyperion jumps in on me and I start orbitting him at 11km'ish. I'm going far too fast for his large hybrids. They literally never hit me once. I destroyed his drones. If he was a capstable repair hyperion than he could have held out.. except you basically never see that for pvp so I just had to keep shooting him until his cap charges ran out. Also given the fact I was doing a tad bit more dps than he could handle. I ransomed him for like 17 million or something really really low. Got it and than killed him.

I try to make a quick estimate of how much it would cost to replace this ship, minus insurance, and then ask for 50-75% of that. I want it to be cheaper to pay me than to purchase and refit a new ship.
But for me, sadly, it's all still theory. I set up a nifty ransom channel and invited my first guest, a Hulk, to join it. All he did was curse me in local and command me to stop shooting. He lost his ship and his capsule. I found out later I'd set a password on the channel and he had no way of joining it. Then today I invited a (too) young Brutix pilot to my ransom channel; he readily agreed to the 20M I asked, but didn't pay within the alloted time and asked me tricky questions like "how do I pay it?" and "can you stop shooting me?" Interestingly, about 30 minutes after the encounter (and after he lost his ship and his capsule) I got the 20M.

I usually ask them what they think its worth, if i feel they are holding back i'll kill them, if i feel they are being sufficient i'll usually try to bargin it up 25% more.
My last ransom went as follows:
Gate activation, i bubble the gate in my sabre, Bustard appears. Say in local, ransom? he replies yes. Ask him how much he thinks its worth he replies 35m, i just say no and cut all commucation. Upon the destruction of his ship he dropped about 600m. -

if i feel like ransoming its 90% the value of the ship, theres incentive to pay it (as the ships worth more)
if they dont / cant its the KM for me, yey.

Another thing to consider is the manners of the individual being ransomed...
Polite = 75% ship cost No so polite = 100% ship cost downright nasty = 100% ship cost then blow the B!tch up anyway

First off, Covert ops alt with ship n' cargo scanner = win
Priorities are:
1) Ship Type 2) Player Age -Granted my alt is there to scan cargo and fit- 3) Fitting 4) Cargo
Also, ransom is usually rounded to suit the ammount of people in gang. If it's 2 people ganking we'll do 80 mil as compared to 90 mil should it be 3 ^_^
Personal favorite is to try to get them to eject from their ship if we have a pilot for it. Failing that it's an ISK based ransom. If his cargo's ubar we might make that an alternative. And sometimes they never get a chance to pay for it whatsoever, it's more or less how we feel, but victims can impact our decision based on a few things such as additude, not logoffski'in and being prompt in responses.
