I played that game once with my free 30 days. I couldnt really get into it so I left, thought it was a unique game idea though for years ago.
I've noticed a few people meantion about Star Wars Galaxies and how EvE may possibly be going in that, what i'd imagine is, failure of a direction. So what really happened to the game, did they change things so much that people got peeved off and left or something? _______________________________ [ 2007.06.07 21:07:22 ] FrankyWave > ransom me guys I am joining XElas !!! |

"As WoW barreled toward 5 million subscribers, SOE launched SWG's Publish 25. The NGE replaced the combat system with a shooter-style twitch game, reduced the value of crafting and entertaining, and collapsed 34 professions into nine classes. Jedi Knight powers, once obtained only after torturous grinding, were now widely available. Creature Handlers and Bio-Engineers, previously stunted by the CU, vanished."
it's a good thing to note this is NOT what CCP is doing by a long shot.
they are increasing the usefullness of "classes" in eve.
I don't believe for a second CCP won't boost the effectivness for ships with bonuses to damps and stuff.
in reality they are making more **** to do, not less.
now if eve suddenly made all t2 frigates the same and got rid of carriers and moms to make one ship type, or other dumb stuff then it would be like SWG.
or hell SWG went form mmorpg to MMOFPS. that's a HUGE change, and not at all what CCP is doing here. Official fanboy of jenny< pink supporter! looking to work in the art department with CCP, 3 years and counting. http://www.digipen.edu/main/Gallery_Games_2004#Narbacular_Dropthi |

You should be able to find the old good swg on private servers but the player base will be tiny.

Still got fond memories of back in the day when i mastered my 32nd profesions (YES 32!! took me that many to unlock my jedi), then went and created my jedi and after a couple of months after helping 2 friends become the 1st and 2nd Rebel Jedi guardians i then became the 3rd rebel jedi guardian on the server (our server Euro Chimeara was predomantly Imp like 80%//20%). Im sure i got screenys somewhere still of doing the covette and alchy :| but meh nerf soe for ruining it !
But yes lets hope CCP don't do the same!.

I'm really, really hoping that SOE has nothing to do with the KoTOR MMO that is going to be announced soon. ----------------------------------------------- It's spelled 'losing' not 'loosing', 'you' not 'u', 'people' not 'ppl', 'your' or 'you're' not 'ur'. |

The NGE was a major fatal flaw in game design ... SoE is and will always be the WORST example any kind of MMO Developer needs to avoid. I don't think EVE is heading into an NGE debacle, but for some reason, and this is something I pull out of the magic hat in my head, CCP seems lately a bit unfocused , as if a whole centralized building is now no more than a series of rooms that somehow try to patch everything together without much communication between them ... they feel disgregated, and you can see it in the way Dev Blogs come by. We are losing the old CCP and getting a new one, a bigger one but a faceless one too. The bigger CCP becomes the more faceless , the devs still do a good job , but they seem more and more detached. Someone earlier mentioned most of the true spirit of CCP went to the (failing) server in China , leaving the Main HQ in a soulless state of affairs. The New Faces are just too new. The old faces hardly look at you in the eye anymore . Then again that's just me.
Eve is growing, there's no stopping that, I just hope they realize their growth will halt eventually and stabilize. I don't foresee a NGE, mostly the change that comes when small family like bussiness explode into huge corporations ... sopmething is always left out in the process ...

My 90% BH set and my 7 Black Sun Helmets are still probably where I left them... I know I should have gave them away on some lotto or something, but I had a slight hope for one day to return...

Never played it myself but I heard it was a really good MMO until they GUTTED it.
After that player base dropped like a rock.

If you want a less extreme example look at Planetside.

I never played it, but I hear much what is said above. Started off as a well thought out (if buggy) game, didn't grow as fast as was hoped, was out sold by rivals, and eventually sold to SoE who butchered it completely. Now most old players have quit, and its not gaining much in the way of new players. Deaded.
Heres hoping SW-MMO-Mk2 (KotOR Online) does a better job of things, and isn't just another "WoW with jedis". ------

I and a few friends played on Europe-Chimaera and made a name for ourselves due to the severely broken professions and combos you could achieve. Those from the server may remember us as the "Ferocious Kittens" (Sari here).
Basically, the devs hadn't play tested the professions even remotely close to enough, and I know of people who were BANNED because GMs thought they must be cheating, when they in fact were just stacking certain stats such as "defense", to make you virtually unhittable.
Oh, did I forget to mention this was BEFORE the game went bad? :D
As people have said before, they introduced atleast two changes in the game that were so massive, they'd have been a substantial jump in an Alpha. This was a couple of years into the game, with an already established player base. The NGE atleast was unknown to the player base only months before it launched, making tons of people quit.
Why? Let's put it this way. If you have a game with a really good crafting system and various other fun professions, why remove that substantial part which differentiates it from other MMOs on the market, (a large reason tons of people played the game at all) to replace it with a bad mimic of WoW (kinda)? No, you don't... unless you're incompetent and have therefore scored a job at SOE.

They basically screwed up when let people have Jedi chars. It would be far fetched to state the everyone wanted one but a LOT of people struggled for one. Myself included. And finally, after months of waiting, I got it and it was an utter disappointment. I was hunted, couldn't practice (grind) in peace and finally, when I had an ok Jedi they started a mass giveaway on them. And later they even moved to NGE which meant that you could pick a Jedi on the char generation screen. Ofc it's not the only problem with SWG: they've screwed the builder classes and transformed the game into a point and click game. Also, the introduction of the so called buffs ruined the whole game. If you wanted to either PvP or PvE you had to have a buff. So you went to the hubs (differed by server) and waited in lines (literally) to get them. And then they even complicated the whole buff mess further with the entertainer buffs. You watched dance and/or intrument players and got buffs (think it was mind buff, I haven't played for a long time).
What hurt me the most, was the PvE system. Now I personally love to do missions. There were two types of missions in SWG:
- go to the mission terminal, click a mission and then go to the location. Kill 1 to 12 enemies and receivce your reward - go to certain non-instanced locations like the Death Watch Bunker or the Corvette (there were some others too) and do a sequence of things within a given time. BUT!!! They were: 1., incredibly crowded 2., Nearly impossible to do even with a VERY strong group.
So I had to leave even though I love the Star Wars franchise as many other people obviously do.
