I was just wondering, while looking at another thread, when missioning, would I be better off either fitting half Blasters and half Rail guns. Or would I be better off filling all my high slots with one gun type, then switching to the other gun type once I need to (eg. Go in with Blasters, kill all the fast frigs that come close, then warp out, fit Railguns, go back in and take out all the long range frigs).

Fit for one range. Use other methods to control the range, like webs and MWD/AB. You effectively kill your potential DPS by mixing weapon ranges.

Never, ever mix gun types like blasters and rails. If one set is at their ideal range for hitting the target, the other set is not, and thus your potential DPS is only a fraction of what it could be.
Fit one set of guns with an idea of the strategy you want to use in mind, and then build the ship around it. For missions, you can try railguns for the main damage at a distance, while using your dronebay to pick off the annoying frigates.

Mixing ranges doesn't make you strong at all ranges. It makes you weak at all ranges. Better to be good at 1 range then none. ___________

I must say I was dubious when people said fit for one range, when I had some rats kite me at 6000 while others orbited at 1500. It turns out fitting for one is indeed best though, as that way all guns are firing 100% of the time. I prefer long range... decimating rats before they close. And if they do close, just use light drones as someone else mentioned. ----- Ymandra's Profile |
