My primary drive is quite fragmented and I'm trying to rectify this. There are a whole bunch of little red lines for fragmented files, but each time I run Defrag it only seems to remove one or two. Also, it only takes a minute or two to do the defrag. I remember that it used to take much longer, even hours to do it. So I'm thinking this could be related.
I'm using XP Pro, SP2, and haven't made any adjustments that I know of. Has MS broken/changed Defrag recently? It used to be much more effective. Hell, I rarely even had any fragmentation at all.
Tips? Advice? Anyone?

Freeing up as much disk-space as possible will help (even if you uninstall games, defrag, and reinstall after).
Also reducing your paging file to 0Mb, rebooting, defragging, and then reinstating the debug file.
Turning off hibernation for the duration of defrag (creates yet another system file).
That's all I can think of.

I use Diskeeper.
My disk was so fuxx0red I couldn't defrag using the built in program but Diskeeper sorted it for me after a couple of passes.
YMMV and all that.

Give AusLogics a go. It's free, fast and does the damned job very well.

Yeah, Diskeeper has an on-boot defrag option so it can access nearly all system files or files that would anyway be held by appz.

i'd rather reformat my drives than PAYING for a program that only solves a problem created by microsoft in first place.

Well you can do that but it's a lot of work. Diskeeper isn't pricey and it roughly emulates having a real filing system. Bargain if you ask me.

Well if you work for a company that requires you to use a computer, write it off as a business expense, I know I did.

i work in I&T for last 11 years. thank you very much. i didn't say i would not use a defragger, i said i would not pay for one. and it's not necessary to pay for one either, there are free ones out there, pretty good ones.

Main tip is to shutdown as much as possible as any program running might hold files open.
Before you go to bed, disable the network connection, kill firewall / AV and everything you can then run the defrag overnight.
The other thing is it doesn't defrag too well if it's really full. What sort of %age space do you have free?

That happens sometimes with xp. Many times its because your disk is full and there isnt enough room to run the defrag. However, on occasion, it does this for no reason at all. Its just easier to go with a 3rd party disk utility like Diskkeeper or something. _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. Defragging destroys vital digital forensic evidence! Don't do it, I still need a job to go into in a years time.

Edited by: NeoShocker on 08/11/2007 15:09:43 I defragged many comps before. Using window's defrag. I seems to realize that if you have a problems using defragment, hit F8 during boot up sequence and go safe mode AND/OR have at least 25% free space or more and try defragging again.
Everytime when HD space is under 25%, it doesn't finish all the way or there's something it "can't" defrag.
I'll consider using Diskeeper since I'm interested to see how it performs and probably a good alternative. :) I don't usually use third party programs. -----------------------------------

Thanks, I'll try the safe mode option. I have 37% free on the drive I'm trying to defrag, more if I move some *cough* files around, so that shouldn't be the problem.
