that depends what you mean really. Any character can perform exactly the same as any other character in the game. Its not, i gather, like wow - where you have class specific skills/abilitys.
If you mean you have picked an engineering starting character, then you can train any of the skills and use any of the items someone who picked a combat orientated character can.
It just might take you a bit longer to train the skills.

Edited by: duffmantt on 08/11/2007 15:34:39 A few hastily thought tips - You can PvP at any skill level, you just have to accept youll only be able to fill a small role (tackler/ew) and you wont be able to do everything. that said, tackling is the most important part of pvp cos even if you have a t2 battleship with faction fittings you wont be able to kill crap without the target being locked down. also, join a corp! Eve isnt a solo game, joining a corp is the most important thing you can do. and finally, you can do anything you want to in eve, just becuase your new, it doesnt matter, go and make your name in the world!!

First tip:
DO THE TUTORIAL. (Yes, it is long and boring but do it anyways)
Otherwise you are guaranteed to be frustrated and ticked at all the people in chat that keep telling you to run the tutorial when you ask stupid questions
The tutorial covers many core game mechanics besides just target, press F1 AND explains things like how you can be shot anywhere, etc.

Only thing that will effect you in game is how long skills will take to train, the wonderful thing about EVE is it isnt boxed in to what you can achieve or do in game by what race or class you choose. Whats important is your attributes.. all skills have a primary and a secondary attribute that effects your training time of that skill. Typically all attributes are fairly important disclueding charisma. If your into combat willpower and perception are the important ones while Memory and intel are important as well for your defensive abilitys on a ship. If your into mining and building its the other way around. Hope this is helpful so with that I wish you best of luck in what path you choose in EVE.

Well I can't tell what race you are, but amarr engineers start with a really nice set of skills, and pretty balanced attributes(khanid/cyberknight). all you're missing is combat/support skills which can be trained up pretty quickly. seriously, I was able to put real lasers on an impairor and rat 0.7 when I made one..imagine if I had stuck with him.

Edited by: Snake Jankins on 08/11/2007 16:14:16 It's a valid question. After downloading the trial April 2004, I made a similar mistake.
I read the descriptions during char creation and wasn't interested to become an engineer or a mechanic, I wanted to become combat pilot of a small vessel or maybe commander of a big ship. And I thought I can't do both quite well at the same time. Then I thought a leadership position in the fleet as commander is less action, than just becoming a normal combat pilot and that's also the reason, why I chose the Brutor bloodline over Sebiestor. The background info on the char creation page suggested that you need lots of perception and willpower as a combat pilot, so I raised that to the max and kept intelligence and everything else low. I was thinking in classes. I thought the difference between Sebiestor and Brutor bloodline is about the same like between elve and dwarf. You usually pick a dwarf for melee combat and prefer elf for a caster and also choose different attributes.
I did the same in EVE. I thought Brutor = better as fighter pilot, Sebiestor = better for a job in a bureau, which I diodn't want.
And this is still the char of the first trial I've been playing. ___________ I've never been so serious as I am now. No, really. |

Edited by: Jakus Cemendur on 08/11/2007 16:14:44 Yes you must bear in mind there aren't really classes in EVE, your starting skills only dictate what you start with, after that you can choose any of all the paths to take in the game. For instance i'm a Caldari character, yet i now exclusively fly Gallente ships and have very few shield/missile skills(the starting ones i got and a few more), but i have a lot more gunnery and armour skills. You can choose to specialise in whatever you want, and even have an industrial guy who can PvP well, though that takes more time because of the extra skills you've got to learn. You can also use things such as implants to change your perception, intelligent and assosciated attributes.
Don't think about EVE as restricting you to certain abilities because of your class, it doesn't work like that. You decide what your character is like.

Looks like you've been taught the first rule of Eve: Forums will smacktalk you more often than giving you usefull information.
As mentioned, your initial picks only give you a headstart on skills that everyone probably picks up eventually anyway. Engineering skills, however, have a tendency to allow you to live longer and fight harder. For example, you may be able to fit another gun cuz of power grid enhancements or get more Shield.
I'd worry more about your Race at the start, as it gives you a big headstart on Ship Types. Just remember that you'll NEVER get all skills to 'max' in Eve, so specalization is the key. Pick a Race based on the type of weapon you think you'd like to use, then build up the skills to use it. Engineering will then help you make the most of the ships you fly.

Three more quick things:
1) When picking your attributes if you plan on playing for a while it will pay off to get them all about even maybe a little less charisma since that one has the least skills to train.
2) As soon as you know you will be playing for a while get a second account (trust me)
3) Also don't trust anyone
Why are you still reading? Its over. Continue to the next post.

"Engineers" of any race tend to start with higher engineering skills, which helps both in fitting a ship (amount of powergrid available), as well as operating ship systems (more cap, more cap recharge, less cap use for some items, etc.) The whole "Engineering" subset of skills is available to all players, and most players agree that getting the important engineering skills to 4 if not 5 is beneficial to anyone.
What "career path" you choose on your first character also determines your starting attributes, which in turn affect skill training times. Skill have a Primary and Secondary attribute, and the time it takes to train up to the next level is reduced as those attributes increase (via learning skills.)
I started with the "Engineering" path and it has served me well. I would, however, take a more balanced approach to attributes, and try to have Intelligence, Memory, Willpower, and Perception all fairly high and even. Charisma can be given a back seat unless you want to train social or leadership or trade skills down the road. ----- You're not what you are, you're just what you do! this is a sandbox game. meaning anyone can do/be anything and everything. what do you mean by "engineer"? someone with lots of skills in the engineering group of skills will most likely have the ability to put up a damn good shield tank on their ships.
but of course, a person who has only skill points in engineering will be unable to fit decent weapons, fly decent ships, use electronic warfare, hull mods, drones, and so on.
if you're new. look at a ship you think is cool. like for example, a battlecruiser, think how you'd like to set one up (usually, lots of guns and a pretty hefty tank). you're gonna want all the skills to fly that ship, and i don't mean battlecruiser level 1, but BC, medium turret(or heavy missiles), you're gonna want armour or shield tank modules like shield extenders and boosters or like armour plates and armour repairers.
if however you mean people who fix stuff, then engineers would be logistics ships. they can be effective in combat - i suppose they're like the healer you'd find in the MMOs where you're restricted to play a specific class - they repair other ships, but tend to lack firepower of their own. nice when working with other ships. ========================================== Wah, Wah, Wah. deal with it. |

During character creating there is an Engineer skill specialization, I believe that is what is being refered to.
Anyway... I started as an engineer in EVE, quickly realised that my skills are poorly utilized at early levels. Sure I can make basic equipment, and slowly move up from there, maybe even find a niche in the market to supply. In the long run I'm sure specializing the engineer class would pull you further and further away from the need to enter combat. I trashed that character, yes even the ships and money and I don't care because it was a day old... haha!
I realised I need some early advancement on firepower to quickly tackle the missions, in the meatime I'm training Engineering, Mechanic and Frigate skills to Level V slowly, but training the inbetween skills to level 2 or 3 depending on their multiplyer. This gives me a very well balanced start to combat and while I am training my skills, I'm buying/selling and transporting trade goods around area to keep the ISK flowing while I'm logged off or running missions.
Thing is I find it easier to buy/sell than to actually create a lot of the equipment (at least in the beginning) and I'm sure after I reach Assault class vessals I will have a good offensive/defensive strategy and a great base to begin training in a more specialized field.
No matter what I do though, I am trained to excel in combat first because I value my survival in space over my savvy in the lab. I have my perception at its maximum and willpower trailing closly behind. Intel and Mem got the lower average scores and my Charisma is pretty much equal to that of a jail guard whose wife recently left him for the higher-paid drug dealer...
I guess you could say I would end up being a pretty badass engineer, but it would take much longer than the "lab rat."

Edited by: Pitt Bull on 08/11/2007 19:25:02 This may be pulling the topic to the side a bit, but I fell like I should disagree with people saying attributes should be spread evenly. If you want a blend of skills with little specialization that might be a good idea, perhaps an interstellar enterpreneur, a sort of jack-of-all-trades so to speak....
But at this late stage in the EVE Universe (over 4 years of building and learning) it would be a tough ride without specializing in something that makes you a valuable asset to a corp or gang. If you would rather build and sell assets, and avoid combat, engineer would be better to specialize. If you want to mine in low sec space, you need to make some quick cash, train some decent fighting skills and get your hands on a BC.

I find that sentry placement is key in insuring maximum damage potential. In CT_Fort, I tend to set them in the courtyard near the access tunnel to the intelligence area, off to the left near the corner. This means that the sentry will be out of sight from rushing enemies, and can make short work of almost anything (unless you have a Heavy uber'ed by a Medic).
I suggest you deploy a dispenser right next to the sentry as well; not only it will allow you to more quickly upgrade it with rockets and more turrets (since the dispenser will give you the metal you need for upgrades), but also make it easier for your fellows to replenish their supplies while enjoying some cover.
In short, engineers are crucial, provided you can study the maps properly and make accurate judgements on key locations for defense.
Oh wait.. you said EvE Online. Damn. Oh, they're alright.

Engys? First and foremost they still haven't fixed pathing for engy pets. Meta-Physicist Healpet and Dampet is still a better solo choice. No significant buff nanos, no offensive nanos, and the guns of choice are so rare nowadays as to be almost legendary. Unless you twink yourself into a pet so far above your level you can't resummon it without help from level 210 MPs, Traders, and Agents no one's going to team with you. About the only thing Engy is good for anymore is making full carbonum sets with low level alts. ----- TANSTAAFL
